Mazda RX-7 FD Spirit R Type C
The automatic Spirit R combined four seats with a 255 PS rotary engine.
Final-series automatic
The Spirit R Type C was a Japan-market variant of the third-generation RX-7. Mazda announced it on 25 March 2002, with sales starting on 22 April. Its four-seat configuration paired a four-speed automatic with the 13B-REW rotary, rated at 188 kW (255 PS).
Equipment and distinctions
Equipment included silver 17-inch BBS wheels, red brake calipers, red leather seats and special instruments. Mazda assigned the Bilstein dampers, drilled discs and stainless-mesh brake hoses to the manual editions.
The Type A seated two; the Type B seated four. Both used five-speed manuals and carried 280 PS ratings.
Chronology and significance
Type C preserved an automatic option in the RX-7’s farewell series. Mazda announced 1,500 Spirit R cars across all three versions, not a Type C production total. Its release forecast FD production ending in August 2002; that statement does not establish the Type C’s exact assembly dates.
