Mazda Carol First Generation 600 586 cc in 1963
A metallic-gold Carol 600 marked Mazda’s millionth vehicle on 9 March 1963. The milestone belonged to company-wide production, not Carol production alone.
The Carol 600 in 1963
This record covers calendar year 1963 within the Carol 600’s 586 cc engine application. It does not designate a separately documented export-market model year.
Mazda’s chronology dates the Carol 600 introduction to November 1962 and identifies it as the company’s first four-door passenger car. It therefore entered 1963 as an existing product, rather than a new generation launched that year. Source: Mazda corporate history.
9 March: Mazda’s millionth vehicle
On 9 March 1963, a Carol 600 painted metallic gold came off the production line as Mazda’s millionth vehicle. This was a cumulative company-wide milestone, not a million Carol cars or a total for 1963. Mazda’s corporate chronology independently places the milestone in March 1963. The distinction matters: the commemorative finish identifies the milestone car; the cited account does not establish a gold-painted retail special edition.
Engine and variant identity
The Carol 600 used a 586 cc aluminum-alloy, water-cooled, four-stroke inline-four. Its “600” designation was a variant name rather than the exact displacement. Mazda traces its development to the Mazda 700 prototype. Source: Mazda’s Carol history.
The Carol 360 was a separate application. Its 358 cc engine and published power changes should not be assigned to this 586 cc record.
Production context and evidence limits
The FIA Historic Database identifies the Carol 600 NR with Japan, 586 cc, four cylinders and rear-wheel drive. Its entry supports the vehicle’s identification, but dates from later homologation: number 1308, effective from 12 April 1964. It is not evidence of a specification change during 1963. The cited manufacturer histories establish production of the milestone car in March 1963, but do not identify its assembly plant or give a Carol 600 production total for that calendar year. No plant-specific attribution, annual quantity or market-specific equipment schedule is assigned here. The FIA homologation interval likewise must not be read as the vehicle’s production period.
Historical significance
Mazda credits the Carol 600 with development experience subsequently applied to the Familia. The gold car consequently links an early passenger-car programme with a wider manufacturing milestone. Source: Mazda’s Carol history.
For the broader model chronology, see the first-generation Carol. This year record concentrates on the documented 1963 event rather than extending later specifications backward.
