Mazda Carol First Generation 600

Introduced in November 1962, the Carol 600 was the larger-engined branch of the original Carol family. Its short production run preceded the Familia, and a gold example marked Mazda’s millionth vehicle in 1963.

The larger-engined Carol

The Carol 600 belongs to the first-generation Mazda Carol, alongside the smaller-capacity Carol 360. Mazda introduced it in November 1962 with a 586 cc engine. Here, 600 identifies the larger-engined variant, encompassing its body and equipment versions. Mazda’s Carol history.

The secondary model history places first-generation assembly in Hiroshima, Japan, and identifies its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It dates the 600’s production to 1962–1964, a shorter period than the generation’s 1962–1970 span. These are calendar dates, not a universal export model-year range. Model and production overview.

Development and engine

Mazda traces the Carol 600 to the Mazda 700 prototype. Its engine was an aluminium, water-cooled, four-stroke inline-four displacing 586 cc. The manufacturer credits experience gained with this car with contributing to the subsequent Familia programme. Mazda’s development account.

The 600 designation rounded the engine’s capacity; it did not indicate an exact 600 cc displacement. Unlike the 360, this version fell outside the contemporary Japanese kei-car category. Museum photograph and vehicle identification.

Bodies, equipment and market names

Mazda’s corporate chronology identifies the November 1962 Carol 600 as the company’s first four-door passenger car. This milestone applies specifically to the 600. Mazda’s product chronology.

The secondary history describes Japanese Standard two-door and DeLuxe two- and four-door versions, with 600 or P600 used as export names. It attributes the 600’s additional overall length relative to the 360 to more prominent bumpers, rather than greater passenger space. These body styles, equipment grades and market names describe different aspects of the range; the names alone do not establish identical specifications across countries. Carol 600 range overview.

Production chronology and historical significance

On 9 March 1963, a metallic-gold Carol 600 marked Mazda’s millionth vehicle. This was a cumulative company production milestone, not a total for the Carol model or the 600 variant. Mazda’s milestone account.

The secondary history reports that Carol 600 production ended in November 1964 following the Familia 800 saloon’s introduction. This record retains 1964 as its production endpoint because the cited manufacturer histories do not independently establish the final assembly month. Carol 600 production account.

Mazda’s chronology dates the Familia passenger car’s introduction to October 1964. Together with the manufacturer’s account of development experience, this places the Carol 600 within Mazda’s transition towards a broader passenger-car range. Mazda’s corporate chronology.
