Mazda Carol First Generation (1962–1970)
The original Carol combined compact saloon bodies with rear-mounted four-cylinder engines. The generation lasted from 1962 to 1970, but the larger-engined Carol 600 ended earlier, in 1964.
The original Carol
The first-generation Mazda Carol was a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive saloon family assembled in Hiroshima, Japan. It included two-door and four-door bodies and two distinct engine-capacity classes. Model history and assembly overview.
Mazda introduced the Carol 360 on 23 February 1962, following the R360 Coupe. Development ran alongside the Mazda 700 prototype shown in 1961. Mazda’s Carol history.
The 1962–1970 heading describes the original generation’s calendar span, not a uniform production period for every version or an export model-year designation. Mazda confirms the generation ended in 1970; the Carol name returned in 1989 after a substantial interruption. Mazda’s account of the revival.
Design and engineering
The sharply descending rear roof profile, described by Mazda as a “cliff cut”, distinguished the Carol’s compact silhouette. The 360 used a 358 cc aluminium, water-cooled, four-stroke inline-four engine and independent trailing-arm suspension at all four wheels. Mazda’s engineering account.
These characteristics belong to the original generation. They should not be transferred to the front-engined Carols introduced after the name’s revival.
Carol 360 and Carol 600
The Carol 600 arrived in November 1962 with a 586 cc water-cooled four-cylinder engine. A Deluxe 360 had appeared that May; September 1963 brought a revised 360 with power increased from 18 to 20 PS and a four-door addition. Mazda’s original-generation history.
Mazda’s corporate chronology identifies the November 1962 Carol 600 as its first four-door passenger car. This precedes the four-door 360: body-style introductions must therefore be read with their engine version. The same chronology distinguishes the micro-mini Carol 360 from the larger Carol 600. Mazda’s product chronology.
The secondary model history records Carol 600 production ending in 1964 and identifies 600 or P600 as export names. Its shorter run must not be extended to 1970 simply because the 360 continued. Market names do not establish identical trim, equipment or availability across countries. Carol 600 overview.
Later development and production boundaries
The secondary history records a further facelift in October 1966, including revised bumpers, relocation of the spare wheel and full gearbox synchromesh. It also reports safety-related changes in 1969 and continued Carol 360 production into 1970. These were developments within the original generation. First-generation chronology.
Mazda’s own retrospective independently confirms the 1970 endpoint. This record retains year-level production boundaries rather than treating an introduction date, facelift date or overseas model year as an exact factory changeover. Mazda’s production-end account.
Historical significance
Mazda credits the Carol 600 with experience that informed the subsequent Familia. A gold Carol 600 marked Mazda’s millionth vehicle on 9 March 1963; this was a company milestone, not a Carol production total. Mazda’s historical account.
The family also participated in Mazda’s early competition activity: the manufacturer’s photographic archive documents Carol 360 and 600 entries in the second Japan Grand Prix in 1964. Mazda’s motorsport archive.
