Mazda Carol First Generation 600 586 cc Inline-Four Engine

The Carol 600 used a 586 cc aluminum-alloy, water-cooled four-stroke inline-four. Introduced in November 1962, it formed part of Mazda’s early expansion into passenger cars.

The Carol 600 engine

The 586 cc engine powered the first-generation Carol 600, introduced in November 1962. Mazda describes it as an aluminum-alloy, water-cooled, four-stroke inline-four. The 600 designation identified the vehicle variant; its documented engine displacement was 586 cc. Mazda’s historical account confirms these characteristics.

Construction and identification

The engine shared its broad construction principles with the Carol 360’s 358 cc inline-four: four cylinders in line, water cooling, four-stroke operation and aluminum construction. These common characteristics do not establish that individual components or specifications were interchangeable. Mazda’s published 358 cc power ratings should not be applied to the 586 cc unit. The FIA Historic Database independently lists the Carol 600 NR with 586 cc, four cylinders, rear-wheel drive and Japan as its country. Its NR designation appears in the vehicle’s name; the database listing does not identify it as an engine code.

Application and chronology

Mazda’s corporate chronology dates the Carol 600 introduction to November 1962 and identifies it as the company’s first four-door passenger car. This is a calendar-date introduction, not a separately established model-year designation.

The FIA listing records the Carol 600 NR under Group T homologation number 1308, with a homologation interval from 12 April 1964 to 1 January 1977. Those dates describe homologation status, not continuous vehicle or engine production. The sources cited here do not establish an engine-specific production end date or manufacturing plant, so neither is assigned to this record.

Historical significance

Mazda traces the Carol 600 to its Mazda 700 prototype and credits the production car with experience subsequently used in developing the Familia. A gold-painted Carol 600 marked Mazda’s millionth vehicle on 9 March 1963; this was a company-wide milestone, not a Carol production total. Source: Mazda’s Carol history.

Evidence and scope

This record covers the 586 cc engine application within the first-generation Carol. The engine code remains unconfirmed by the cited manufacturer account and FIA catalogue entry. Bore, stroke, valve arrangement, compression ratio, output and market-specific tuning are therefore not assigned here.

No engine illustration is included: Mazda’s engine photograph on the cited history page is explicitly captioned as a 358 cc unit and does not document the subject of this record.
