Mazda MX-5 Miata ND 30th Anniversary Edition SKYACTIV-G 2.0 in 2019

The 2.0-litre anniversary edition covered US soft-top and RF models and Japan’s RF. Japanese RF production was scheduled from August 2019; a final production date is not established.

2019: US model year and Japanese RF launch

This year record belongs beneath the 30th Anniversary Edition SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine. It covers the US 2019 model-year anniversary cars and the Japanese Roadster RF launch announced during calendar year 2019. The anniversary designation marked a commemorative edition within the ND generation, celebrating thirty years of the MX-5.

The US edition offered both a fabric soft-top and the retractable-hardtop RF. In Japan, SKYACTIV-G 2.0 was specified for the RF; the domestic soft-top used the 1.5-litre engine covered in the separate 2019 Japanese soft-top record. These market distinctions are documented in Mazda’s US launch announcement and Japanese announcement.

United States: specification and anniversary identity

Mazda’s February announcement described the US edition as based on the 2019 Grand Touring specification, with a revised powertrain rated at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft. Both roof types could be ordered with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Those output figures describe the US specification and are not presented here as Japanese ratings.

Racing Orange paint distinguished the edition. The RF had a matching orange roof, while the soft-top used black fabric. Recaro seats, Alcantara trim, orange cabin accents, 17-inch forged RAYS wheels and serialized anniversary badging reinforced its identity. The significance of the edition was the combination of the updated production powertrain and commemorative equipment; the launch announcement does not establish an anniversary-exclusive engine tune. United States: allocation increased in May

After the February Chicago unveiling, the initial US allocation of 500 cars was reserved within four hours. On 13 May 2019, Mazda announced another 143 cars for US customers on the waiting list, bringing the allocation to 643. These additional cars came from the existing worldwide anniversary programme of 3,000 cars; they did not increase that programme’s total.

The figure of 643 is a US vehicle allocation, not a verified delivery total or a separate RF production count. Likewise, the worldwide anniversary limit must not be treated as the number of 2.0-litre engines manufactured. Source: Mazda’s May allocation announcement.

Japan: RF reservations and planned production

Mazda’s announcement of 25 March 2019 specified the Japanese anniversary RF with SKYACTIV-G 2.0, rear-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual used the RS as its base; the automatic used the VS. Bilstein dampers were listed for manual cars only.

RF reservation applications were scheduled for 27 May–10 June 2019, with production planned for August 2019 onward. This was a prospective production schedule, not confirmation of an individual vehicle’s build date or customer delivery. The announcement gives no final production date.

Manufacturing context and historical scope

The RF’s documented manufacturing context was Mazda’s Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan, where RF production began in October 2016. That establishes the RF production location and background, rather than an anniversary-specific factory ledger or the manufacturing location of individual engines. Read alongside the 30th Anniversary Edition record, the 2019 evidence shows how one commemorative programme reached different markets through different specifications and ordering schedules. The US model-year designation and Japan’s announced calendar-year production schedule should remain distinct. Neither establishes a worldwide production end date for this engine application.
