An anniversary edition within the ND generation

The Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition was a commemorative variant of the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata (ND), introduced in 2019. It celebrated thirty years of the MX-5 model line, whose original car debuted at Chicago in 1989. Mazda returned to the Chicago Auto Show for the anniversary unveiling and announced a worldwide limit of 3,000 cars shared between soft-top and RF retractable-hardtop versions. This was one anniversary edition spanning two roof configurations, rather than a separate generation. Mazda’s global announcement.

Identification and equipment

Racing Orange paint and a serial-numbered anniversary badge distinguished the edition. Equipment included forged Rays ZE40 RS30 aluminium wheels, Recaro seats, orange brake calipers and orange cabin accents. Brembo supplied the front calipers and Nissin the rear calipers; Alcantara appeared on the seats and interior trim. Mazda specified Bilstein dampers for manual-transmission cars, a nine-speaker Bose system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto availability in selected markets. These qualifications matter when identifying an individual example. Global equipment specification.

For the United States, Mazda described a black cloth roof on the soft-top and a Racing Orange roof on the RF. The American announcement connected the colour treatment with the yellow MX-5 Miata Club Racer displayed at Chicago in 1989. U.S. introduction.

Engines and transmissions by market

The anniversary name did not identify a single worldwide engine specification. The global unveiling should be read alongside national documentation.

  • Japan: The Roadster soft-top used SKYACTIV-G 1.5 with a six-speed manual transmission. The Roadster RF used SKYACTIV-G 2.0 with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Both were front-engined and rear-wheel drive. The soft-top was based on RS specification; the RF used RS for manual cars and VS for automatic cars. Japanese specification table.
  • Portugal: Both soft-top and RF versions were offered with the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G engine rated at 184 cv and a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual gearbox. This national specification must not be extended to Japanese soft-tops. Portuguese launch announcement.
  • United States: Mazda identified the edition as a 2019 model-year car, based on Grand Touring specification, with a powertrain rated at 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. Buyers could order either roof configuration with manual or automatic transmission. U.S. specification and ordering announcement.

The Portuguese and American power ratings retain their respective published units. Equipment and transmission availability should be checked against the car’s destination market.

Production context and launch chronology

The edition belonged to Mazda’s Hiroshima-built ND line: Mazda documented the start of fourth-generation MX-5 production at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan, on 5 March 2015. That date establishes the generation’s manufacturing origin, not the start of anniversary-edition production. ND production announcement.

The U.S. anniversary announcement was dated 7 February 2019 and opened orders that day; Mazda’s global release followed on 8 February. The initial American allocation was 500 cars, a launch allocation rather than a verified final national total. U.S. launch announcement.

Mazda’s Japanese announcement of 25 March scheduled domestic soft-top production for April and RF production from August onward. It planned 150 Japanese-market cars, with scope to adjust that allocation according to demand. These were production plans and reservation arrangements, not a worldwide delivery timetable. Japanese production and reservation schedule.

Portugal announced local availability on 29 July 2019, with ten cars allocated. Portuguese introduction. The cited announcements establish the edition’s 2019 introduction and intended 3,000-car worldwide limit; they do not provide an audited completion total or an exact final assembly date.

Historical significance

The edition linked the ND generation with the MX-5’s original Chicago debut through distinctive colour, numbered identification and a focused equipment package. Mazda’s retrospective history places the anniversary model within the fourth generation, which had premiered in 2014 and launched in 2015. Its significance is therefore as a commemorative development of the existing roadster line, with specifications adapted to individual markets. Mazda’s fourth-generation history.
