Mazda MX-5 Miata ND 30th Anniversary Edition SKYACTIV-G 1.5 Engine
Japan’s Roadster 30th Anniversary soft top paired SKYACTIV-G 1.5 with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. This engine record covers that Japanese-market application.
Application and identity
The SKYACTIV-G 1.5 powered the Japanese-market soft-top 30th Anniversary Edition. Mazda’s March 2019 specification table pairs it with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. The Japanese anniversary soft top was based on the RS manual grade. This fitment should not be generalized to export anniversary soft tops. Mazda’s Japanese announcement.
Engineering and development
The 1.5-litre direct-injection petrol engine was part of the Japanese fourth-generation Roadster from its 2015 introduction. Mazda positioned the engine behind the front axle and emphasized its contribution to balanced weight distribution and responsive handling. Its development belonged to the lightweight, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive architecture of the ND. Mazda’s 2015 Japanese launch announcement.
Before the anniversary edition, Mazda revised the Japanese Roadster for July 2018. The manufacturer described combustion improvements to SKYACTIV-G 1.5 that maintained or increased torque across the operating range while improving environmental and fuel-economy performance. It also reported refinements to accelerator response. These changes provide the development context for the subsequent anniversary application; the separately described 2.0-litre RF modifications must not be treated as specifications for this engine. Production context and chronology
Mazda established fourth-generation MX-5 vehicle production at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan, in March 2015. This identifies the generation’s vehicle-production location, rather than the manufacturing location of individual engine components. Mazda’s production announcement.
The March 2019 anniversary announcement scheduled Japanese soft-top production for April and sales-discussion reservations for 5–15 April. These are calendar dates and an announced production plan, not a verified build range or an export model-year designation. The release does not establish the last production date for this engine application. Japanese anniversary production schedule.
Market distinctions and historical significance
Japan’s anniversary RF used SKYACTIV-G 2.0 with either a manual or automatic transmission. The announced worldwide limit of 3,000 anniversary cars and planned Japanese allocation of 150 covered multiple configurations; neither is a production total for the 1.5-litre engine application. Mazda’s anniversary specification table and allocation statement.
Viewed alongside the original ND engineering programme, this application illustrates the continued role of the smaller direct-injection engine in the Japanese Roadster. Its historical significance lies in that continuity within a commemorative variant, rather than an independently documented anniversary engine redesign. See the broader MX-5 Miata model history.
