Mazda MX-5 Miata NC Japanese 20th Anniversary Edition
A Japanese-market NC anniversary variant offered with two roof and transmission combinations.
Identity and introduction
Mazda introduced the Roadster 20th Anniversary in Japan on 31 July 2009, marking twenty years since the original Roadster’s 1989 launch. It belongs beneath the third-generation MX-5 Miata (NC) as a special-edition variant. Roadster was its Japanese sales name; this record covers the domestic edition specifically.
Two configurations were offered: an RS-based soft-top with a six-speed manual gearbox, and a VS RHT-based power retractable hardtop with a six-speed automatic. Both used rear-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre DOHC engine. Tax-inclusive launch prices were ¥2,860,000 and ¥3,110,000 respectively. Mazda’s English launch announcement.
Appearance and equipment
Crystal White Pearl Mica was the sole body colour. Distinguishing details included RECARO seats combining black Alcantara with red leather, anniversary emblems on both front fenders, and clear fog lamps. Their surrounds were black on the soft-top and silver on the RHT.
Both configurations had 17-inch alloy wheels, 205/45R17 84W tyres and a front tower brace connected to the cowl. These were additions to the VS RHT specification but already standard on the RS donor car. Conversely, five-setting seat heating and synthetic-leather padding on the door armrests and console lid were additions to the soft-top specification but standard on the VS RHT donor. The manual version received a fabric roof with a glass rear window. These distinctions explain why the shared equipment list does not represent identical changes to each base grade. Development and production context
The NC was a newly designed generation introduced in 2005, retaining Mazda’s driver-and-car harmony concept while addressing newer safety and environmental requirements. The retractable-hardtop derivative followed in 2006, with a roof mechanism designed to preserve luggage space. The anniversary edition therefore brought commemorative trim to two established NC roof configurations. Mazda’s NC heritage account.
Mazda began third-generation MX-5 production on 17 May 2005 at Ujina No. 1 near its Hiroshima headquarters in Japan. That establishes the generation’s manufacturing origin; the production announcement does not separately document the anniversary edition’s assembly dates. Mazda’s production announcement.
Chronology and scope
The confirmed 31 July 2009 date is the Japanese sales launch, not a separately established production start or model-year designation. Mazda’s launch release gives neither an edition-specific production total nor a closing date. Its worldwide Roadster production figures describe the wider model line, not this edition. Specifications and allocation figures for overseas anniversary editions should not be transferred to this Japanese record. Contemporary launch release.
Within Mazda’s retrospective history, the edition marks the NC’s participation in the Roadster’s twentieth anniversary. Its significance is commemorative, with both established roof formats represented. Mazda’s heritage account.
