Mazda MX-5 Miata NC 25th Anniversary Edition

Unveiled in 2014, this retractable-hardtop NC special edition celebrated 25 years of the MX-5 with Soul Red Metallic paint, contrasting black details and commemorative interior trim.

Overview

The 25th Anniversary Edition was a commemorative variant of the third-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata (NC). Mazda unveiled it at the New York International Auto Show on 16 April 2014 to mark a quarter-century since the MX-5’s 1989 introduction. It used the power-retractable-hardtop body and was offered with six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Mazda’s unveiling announcement identifies the displayed car as US specification.

The anniversary designation identifies a special edition within the NC generation, rather than a separate generation or engine family. The new SKYACTIV chassis shown at the same event belonged to the forthcoming successor, not this anniversary car.

Introduction and production chronology

The calendar-year unveiling and US model-year designation differ: Mazda announced the American edition as a 2015 model, with 100 cars allocated to the United States. That allocation is not a worldwide production total. Mazda North American Operations’ launch release.

Mazda’s US specification deck lists June 2014 as the anniversary PRHT’s scheduled production start, separately from May 2014 for the regular soft-top and retractable-hardtop ranges. This is a production-planning date; the cited document does not establish the anniversary edition’s final assembly date or identify its assembly plant. 2015 MX-5 specification deck, page 1.

Exterior and interior

Soul Red Metallic was the exclusive exterior colour, contrasted with black roof panels, windscreen pillars and mirrors. The retractable hardtop provided the edition’s defining body configuration. Mazda’s global announcement.

For the US edition, Mazda specified dark gunmetal 17-inch wheels and Almond leather upholstery. Red stitching, anniversary headrest markings and stainless-steel sill plates distinguished the cabin. The dashboard panel combined a red base with a hand-applied black finish, producing individual variations. A numbered anniversary badge appeared on the driver-side front wing. Engine and chassis equipment

The US car retained the NC’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Mazda described selecting pistons, connecting rods and flywheels for favourable weight and balance within existing manufacturing tolerances, aiming to improve engine response. This description should not be treated as evidence of an increased power rating. Mazda’s engineering explanation.

US equipment depended on transmission: the specification deck identifies Bilstein dampers, sport-tuned suspension and a limited-slip differential as manual-transmission equipment. These features therefore should not be assigned automatically to the automatic version. 2015 MX-5 specification deck, anniversary equipment differences.

UK specification and allocation

Mazda’s June 2014 UK brochure describes the edition as a 2.0 MZR Roadster Coupe, with a 1,999 cc petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox. Its quoted output is 160 PS at 7,000 rpm, with 188 Nm at 5,000 rpm. These are UK brochure figures and should not be substituted for US ratings.

UK equipment included Light Stone heated leather seats, Bilstein dampers, a limited-slip differential and a 6.1-inch navigation system. The brochure states that 750 cars would be available in the UK from an advertised global volume of 1,000. This records Mazda’s contemporary allocation statement rather than an independently verified final worldwide build count. Mazda UK anniversary brochure, June 2014, final page.

Historical context

The edition commemorated the established MX-5 while Mazda publicly previewed the engineering of its successor. Its historical role is therefore as an anniversary expression of the NC, combining familiar mechanical foundations with distinctive finishes. Mazda’s contemporary announcement.
