Mazda MX-5 Miata NB 10th Anniversary Edition

A commemorative NB roadster combining blue exterior and interior detailing with a six-speed manual transmission.

Identity and historical context

The 10th Anniversary Edition was a commemorative variant of the second-generation MX-5 Miata (NB). It celebrated the model line’s first decade.

Mazda’s chronology places the NB’s Japanese introduction in January 1998. Its American history identifies the redesigned car as a 1999 model introduced in 1998. These calendar-year and model-year conventions describe the same generation. The anniversary edition belongs within that generation, rather than marking another generational change. Body, identification and engineering

The soft-top roadster paired a 1.8-litre DOHC engine with a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox, extending availability of the previously Japan-only transmission overseas. Innocent Blue Mica paint, a blue roof, polished alloy wheels and black-and-blue upholstery identified the edition. Numbered fender badges, special keys and owner certificates reinforced its commemorative identity. Contemporary Mazda announcement.

Launch and market allocation

Announced on 15 December 1998, the edition was scheduled for Japanese sales on 4 January 1999 and overseas distribution that spring. Mazda announced 7,500 cars: Japan 500, North America 3,150, Europe 3,700 and Australia 150. These are announced allocations, not an audited production count.

Mazda described substantially shared specifications, with regulatory differences by destination. The announcement does not enumerate those differences; individual-market power ratings and equipment should therefore not be generalized worldwide. Launch dates and allocation.

Production context and dating

The edition belonged to Mazda’s Hiroshima-built NB line. Mazda’s subsequent 700,000-car announcement identifies Ujina No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan, as the Roadster production plant. That announcement establishes the manufacturing context; it does not establish anniversary-specific assembly start and finish dates.

The December 1998 anniversary release contains an apparent dating error, placing the preceding generation change in January 1999. Mazda’s dedicated MX-5 chronology instead records the second generation in January 1998 and the anniversary edition in January 1999. The latter chronology is followed here.

Place in the MX-5 story

The edition joined distinctive presentation with wider six-speed availability, giving the anniversary a mechanical as well as commemorative dimension. Mazda’s announcement.

For a later example of Mazda’s anniversary editions, see the ND 30th Anniversary Edition. Its specifications belong to that later generation.
