Mazda MX-5 Miata NC Japanese 20th Anniversary Edition 2.0-Litre DOHC Engine
Both Japanese 20th Anniversary versions used a 2.0-litre DOHC engine, with distinct manual and automatic powertrain configurations.
Engine application
The 2.0-litre double-overhead-camshaft engine powered both versions of the Japanese 20th Anniversary Edition. Mazda launched this commemorative Roadster in Japan on 31 July 2009. Its two rear-wheel-drive configurations paired the RS-based soft top with a six-speed manual transmission and the VS-based Power Retractable Hard Top (RHT) with a six-speed automatic. Mazda’s anniversary announcement confirms both combinations.
This record covers that specific engine application within the NC generation, rather than every 2.0-litre MX-5 engine. The launch date is a Japanese calendar-date event, not evidence of a universal model-year designation.
Roof and transmission configurations
| Japanese anniversary configuration | Base grade | Engine designation in launch release | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manually operated soft top | RS | 2.0L DOHC | Six-speed manual |
| Power Retractable Hard Top | VS RHT | 2.0L DOHC | Six-speed automatic |
These are the pairings documented for this Japanese special edition; the release does not offer every roof-and-transmission combination. It identifies commemorative equipment but announces no anniversary-specific engine upgrade. Source: Mazda, 31 July 2009.
Manual and automatic engineering
The anniversary model followed the Japanese Roadster facelift launched on 9 December 2008. Mazda’s facelift documentation describes manual-engine changes including a forged crankshaft, fully floating piston pins and revised valve springs. Peak-power speed rose from 6,700 to 7,000 rpm, while the rev limit increased from 7,000 to 7,500 rpm. These figures describe engine speed, not power output. The Japanese release explicitly assigns these changes to manual-transmission cars. Mazda’s Japanese technical announcement.
Six-speed manual cars also received an induction sound enhancer and revised synchronizers to improve intake sound and shift operation. The six-speed automatic gained Direct Mode, allowing paddle-operated shifts while Drive remained selected, and Active Adaptive Shift, which adjusted gear selection to driving conditions. These distinctions provide the relevant facelift context for the anniversary edition’s RS manual and VS RHT automatic applications; the manual engine’s 7,500-rpm limit should not be transferred to the automatic. Chronology and evidence limits
The documented chronology separates the December 2008 mechanical update from the July 2009 commemorative edition. This engine application illustrates how the anniversary car combined an established powertrain with edition-specific equipment.
The cited releases do not establish an engine assembly plant, an anniversary-specific production total or a production end date. They also do not provide a complete paired power-and-torque specification for the anniversary cars. Those details remain unassigned here rather than being borrowed from another market, an earlier NC or a later catalogue.
