Ford 429 V8 (1971 Mustang Mach 1)

The Mach 1’s 1971 big-block option

The 429 V8 was an optional performance engine in the U.S.-market Ford Mustang Mach 1 for the 1971 model year. Ford offered Cobra Jet and Cobra Jet Ram Air versions, with the Drag Pack providing further engine modifications. The Mach 1 remained a SportsRoof-bodied variant within the first-generation Mustang; selecting a 429 did not create a separate generation or body style. Engine design and development

The Cobra Jet belonged to Ford’s 429/460 engine family. Ford Racing traces the underlying 429 passenger-car design to the 1968 Thunder Jet, with wedge combustion chambers and hydraulic valve operation. Cobra Jet development added a more aggressive hydraulic camshaft, increased carburettor capacity and cylinder heads with larger ports and valves.

The Super Cobra Jet introduced mechanical valve operation, forged aluminium pistons and additional provisions for demanding use. Neither version should be confused with the Boss 429, whose distinctive aluminium cylinder heads and combustion chambers belonged to a separate competition-oriented specification. Period specifications

Ford’s U.S. sales brochure gives the 429 Cobra Jet a displacement of 429 cubic inches, a 4.36-inch bore, a 3.59-inch stroke and an 11.3:1 compression ratio, with premium fuel specified. The advertised output was 370 hp, rising to 375 hp with the Drag Pack. Ford explicitly identifies these as dynamometer-derived gross horsepower figures; they are not wheel-horsepower measurements or directly interchangeable with later net ratings.

Cobra Jet, Ram Air and Drag Pack

Ram Air described the induction equipment. Ford listed a non-Ram-Air Cobra Jet and a Ram Air version with functional hood induction. Their supporting equipment included competition suspension, dual exhausts and additional cooling; power front disc brakes were mandatory at extra cost.

Drag Pack described a further performance package, available with either Cobra Jet induction configuration. Ford specified a 3.91:1 Traction-Lok or 4.11:1 Detroit Locker rear axle, together with engine changes including forged pistons and modified rotating components. Production scope and significance

The Mustang application covered the 1971 model year, while Ford Racing records the end of Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engine production in 1971. These are different dating statements: a model-year designation does not establish an individual engine’s calendar build date. Within this catalogue, the 429 follows the 1969–1970 Mach 1’s 428 Cobra Jet and sits alongside the separately documented 351 Cleveland. Its historical significance lies in bringing the 429/460 family’s performance derivatives to the Mach 1 for a brief application. Specifications here describe Ford’s U.S. offering; they should not be assumed to document every export configuration.
