Alfa Romeo 75 Original Generation 2.0 Twin Spark in 1987

Introduced at Geneva in 1987, the 2.0 Twin Spark combined twin ignition, fuel injection and variable inlet timing with the Alfa 75’s established transaxle chassis.

The Twin Spark arrives

The Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 Twin Spark debuted at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show. It brought twin ignition, electronic fuel injection and variable inlet-valve timing to the naturally aspirated two-litre version of the 75. This record covers its calendar-year introduction, rather than asserting a uniform worldwide 1987 model-year specification. Manufacturer history.

Within this catalogue, 1987 belongs beneath the 1962 cc Twin Spark engine, within the 2.0 Twin Spark variant of the original-generation Alfa Romeo 75.

Introduction-year engine

The aluminium four-cylinder displaced 1,962 cc, with an 84.0 mm bore and 88.5 mm stroke. Two spark plugs per cylinder gave Twin Spark its name. Alfa Romeo’s retrospective lists 109 kW (148 PS) at 5,800 rpm without a catalyst and 107 kW (145 PS) with one. These are separate specifications; the figures do not establish availability in every market during 1987. PS denotes metric horsepower. Technical retrospective.

Vehicle and production setting

The Italian-built four-door saloon came from Arese, near Milan. Its five-speed transmission drove the rear wheels. Alfa Romeo retrospective.

The established chassis placed the engine at the front and grouped the clutch, gearbox and differential at the rear. Front torsion-bar suspension and a rear de Dion arrangement with Watt linkage continued the Alfetta-derived engineering tradition. Twin Spark exterior details included wheelarch extensions, side skirts, front and rear spoilers, and airflow-deflecting surrounds at the front side windows. Stellantis Heritage.

Chronology and significance

The Twin Spark joined a model line introduced in 1985; its arrival did not mark a new generation. Stellantis Heritage separately dates the broader range update to autumn 1988. The 1987 car illustrates how Alfa Romeo developed its established saloon through combustion and engine-control improvements. Twin Spark subsequently became a recognisable name across the marque’s engine range. Heritage account.

The cited histories do not establish country-specific 1987 equipment lists or a calendar-year production total. Later specifications and whole-run production figures are therefore excluded.
