Alfa Romeo 75 Original Generation 2.0 Twin Spark
Introduced in 1987, the 2.0 Twin Spark combined twin-plug ignition and fuel injection with the Alfa 75's rear-wheel-drive transaxle layout.
Position in the 75 range
The 2.0 Twin Spark was a naturally aspirated, four-door sporting saloon within the Alfa Romeo 75 original generation. Introduced at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show, it developed the two-litre offering through electronic injection, twin-plug ignition and variable inlet timing. It belongs at variant level, alongside the 1.8 Turbo, rather than constituting a separate generation. Stellantis Heritage history.
Twin Spark engineering
The 1,962 cc engine retained an aluminium block but gained a redesigned aluminium cylinder head. Chain-driven twin overhead camshafts operated two valves per cylinder; each cylinder had two spark plugs. Bosch Motronic management and variable inlet timing complemented the revised combustion chambers. These details describe the eight-valve engine fitted to this 75. Contemporary technical account, Motor Sport, April 1987.
Alfa Romeo’s retrospective specifies 109 kW (148 PS) without a catalyst and 107 kW (145 PS) with one. These are separate specifications, not interchangeable ratings for every market or year. Manufacturer technical history.
Chassis and appearance
The 75 retained the Alfetta-derived arrangement of a front engine and rear-mounted clutch, gearbox and differential. Front torsion-bar suspension worked with a De Dion rear axle located by a Watt linkage. The Twin Spark’s aerodynamic treatment included front and rear spoilers, wheelarch extensions, side skirts and front-window wind deflectors. These additions developed the existing wedge-shaped body rather than introducing a new body style. Stellantis Heritage.
Motor Sport’s launch assessment described a 25% limited-slip differential and revised suspension settings. It praised the two-litre car’s balance and engine response while finding the gearshift long and somewhat rubbery. Its April 1987 report anticipated British availability in June or July; that forecast should not be treated as a confirmed delivery date. Period launch report.
Production chronology and market scope
The 75 was associated with Alfa Romeo’s Arese production site near Milan. The Twin Spark joined the range in calendar year 1987, with a Limited Edition offered in 1991. Alfa Romeo’s German retrospective says that only the 1.6 petrol and two-litre turbodiesel remained in its 1992 price-list account. Accordingly, the parent generation’s 1985–1992 dates should not be copied as this variant’s production period: the cited history does not establish a universal final assembly date for the Twin Spark. Registration dates and national sales periods can differ from manufacture dates. Alfa Romeo retrospective.
Historical significance
The Twin Spark brought an important new engine identity to the established 75 chassis. Stellantis Heritage presents dual ignition and variable timing as defining elements of a family that became closely associated with Alfa Romeo. Its account identifies the American-market Milano versions separately as V6 cars; their specifications should not be transferred to this four-cylinder variant. Manufacturer heritage account.
