Alfa Romeo 75 Original Generation 1.8 Turbo

Introduced in 1986, the 1.8 Turbo combined turbocharged four-cylinder power with the Alfa 75’s rear-wheel-drive transaxle layout.

The standard-production Turbo

The 1.8 Turbo was a four-door sporting saloon within the Alfa Romeo 75 Original Generation, built at Arese, Italy. Introduced in 1986, its 1,779 cc petrol engine produced 114 kW (155 PS). A water-cooled Garrett turbocharger, intercooler and oil cooler supported the increased output. A five-speed rear transaxle drove the rear wheels. Manufacturer history.

Design and historical context

The 75 inherited the mechanical arrangement of the preceding Giulietta: a front-mounted engine with transmission at the rear. Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile, directed by Ermanno Cressoni, reshaped that foundation into the new saloon. The standard Turbo subsequently provided the starting point for a dedicated competition derivative. This connection gives the road car a place in Alfa Romeo’s touring-car history, but competition specifications must remain separate from its own. Stellantis Heritage.

Development and specification boundaries

In April 1990, the later Turbo Quadrifoglio Verde raised output to 121 kW (165 PS). These are distinct specifications, not interchangeable figures. The manufacturer’s retrospective lists only the 1.6 petrol and 2.0 turbodiesel in the remaining 1992 range; the parent generation’s 1985–1992 dates therefore should not be treated as an exact production interval for the original Turbo specification. US-market Milano V6 specifications likewise do not describe this four-cylinder variant. Manufacturer chronology.

Separate from the Turbo Evoluzione

The Turbo Evoluzione is excluded from this record. Its engine displacement was reduced from the standard Turbo’s 1,779 cc to 1,762 cc for competition classification. Although the road-going Evoluzione shared the earlier Turbo’s nominal 155 PS rating, it was a separate homologation derivative. Its aerodynamic additions, competition modifications and subsequent IMSA performance figures must not be assigned to the standard-production 1.8 Turbo. Stellantis Heritage’s distinction.
