Mazda RX-8 Original Generation Sport Prestige Limited
A Japanese special edition introduced in November 2004, combining beige leather upholstery with suspension and body-rigidity improvements.
Overview
The Sport Prestige Limited went on sale in Japan on 24 November 2004. It combined upgraded trim with chassis revisions and offered two bases: Type S with a six-speed manual transmission, and Type E with a four-speed Activematic automatic. Mazda’s launch announcement.
Within this catalogue it belongs beneath the RX-8 Original Generation. It is a special-edition variant, rather than a separate generation.
Equipment and chassis
Beige leather seats and matching door trim distinguished the cabin. Exterior changes included dark-silver wheels, a rear lip spoiler and fog lamps. Radiant Ebony Mica joined Titanium Grey Metallic II and Brilliant Black.
Chassis changes included a urethane-filled front suspension crossmember, specially tuned dampers, and reinforcement at the upper A-pillars and rear damper mounts. The Type E gained 225/45R18 tyres; this size was already standard on Type S. Factory equipment specification.
Body and rotary-engine context
The underlying RX-8 combined four doors and four seats with a body lacking conventional centre pillars. Mazda distinguished the original Japanese Type S as the high-power manual version and Type E as the standard-power automatic. These base-grade distinctions matter when identifying a Sport Prestige Limited; equipment shared by the edition does not establish identical engine output. RX-8 production announcement.
The RX-8’s RENESIS engine used two rotors of 654 cc each, giving a combined nominal displacement of 1,308 cc. Its naturally aspirated design incorporated side exhaust ports and a sequential intake system. These describe the engine family, rather than a special engine developed for this edition. RENESIS production announcement.
Production context and historical significance
RX-8 production began at Mazda’s Ujina No.1 plant in Hiroshima, Japan, on 17 February 2003. That date marks the start of the model line, not this later special edition. Mazda’s production record.
The edition’s announcement establishes a Japanese sales-launch date, not a model-year designation or complete production interval. It gives neither an edition production total nor an end date. Its combination of cabin upgrades and structural changes illustrates Mazda’s refinement of the early RX-8. Edition announcement.
