Mazda RX-8 Original Generation Japanese Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary Edition
A Japanese-market anniversary variant celebrating Mazda’s rotary heritage through special trim and chassis equipment.
Identity and introduction
Japanese sales began on 8 August 2007, marking forty years since the Cosmo Sport. Mazda announced a 200-car limit, not a verified completed total. The edition paired Type S with a six-speed manual or Type E with a six-speed automatic; both cost ¥3,150,000 including tax. Regional anniversary editions fall outside this record. Distinctive equipment
Marble White paint, anniversary badges, dark-silver 18-inch wheels and black leather/light-silver Alcantara upholstery distinguished the edition. Its twin-rotor engine displaced 654 cc per rotor and received carefully balanced rotors. Dedicated Bilstein dampers and a foam-filled front suspension crossmember addressed ride and steering feel. Larger brakes and 225/45R18 tyres were upgrades for the automatic but already standard on the manual’s base grade. Equipment specification.
Body, production and historical context
The underlying RX-8 combined four doors and four seats with naturally aspirated RENESIS rotary power. Mazda documented RX-8 assembly at Ujina No.1 in Hiroshima, Japan; this establishes the model’s manufacturing context rather than a separately verified assembly schedule for the anniversary batch. Mazda’s production account.
This is a variant within the original RX-8 generation. The parent’s 2003–2012 span must not be read as this edition’s production period. Its documented 2007 introduction is a Japanese calendar date, not an overseas model-year designation. The cited announcement supplies neither an exact final assembly date nor a transmission-by-transmission production breakdown.
