Mazda RX-8 Original Generation Japanese Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary Edition 1308 cc Rotary Engine

A 654 cc × 2 RENESIS application with specially balanced rotors, offered in the Japanese anniversary edition with six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Identity and application

This engine record covers the twin-rotor application in the Japanese Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary Edition. Mazda specified 654 cc per rotor, giving a combined nominal displacement of 1308 cc. Japanese sales began on 8 August 2007, with versions based on the Type S six-speed manual and Type E six-speed automatic. This is an engine application within the original RX-8 generation, rather than a separate generation. Mazda anniversary announcement.

RENESIS engineering and manufacture

Mazda began RENESIS production at its Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan, on 29 January 2003. That date identifies the engine family’s production launch, not the start of anniversary-edition manufacture. Developed for the four-door, four-seat RX-8, RENESIS used natural aspiration, side exhaust ports and a sequential intake system. Its compact packaging helped accommodate the sports car’s passenger layout. Mazda RENESIS production announcement.

For the anniversary edition, Mazda specified rotors carefully balanced for weight and rotational characteristics, together with a dedicated engine cover. The stated purpose was smoother engine operation; the announcement does not establish an additional power increase or a new engine family. Anniversary engine equipment.

Manual and automatic specifications

The two transmission applications should remain distinct:

  • Six-speed manual: the anniversary car used the Type S as its basis. Mazda’s 2006 update identifies the Type S engine as a six-intake-port design.
  • Six-speed automatic: the anniversary car used the Type E as its basis. The six-speed automatic introduced in Japan during 2006 also received six intake ports, replacing the previous automatic application’s four-port arrangement.

Thus, the earlier four-speed automatic’s engine specifications should not be carried over to this edition. Mazda described the six-port automatic engine as improving intake efficiency and high-speed torque, while the transmission used Active Adaptive Shift control. These distinctions are documented in the Japanese-market 2006 update; the anniversary release confirms the two base grades. Exact power, torque and engine-speed ratings are not supplied in these releases and are not assigned here.

Chronology and significance

The edition commemorated forty years since Mazda introduced the Cosmo Sport in 1967. Its engine treatment emphasized refinement within the established rotary programme. The August 2007 announcement is a Japanese sales date, not a model-year designation or a documented engine assembly date. It does not establish the final assembly date of these specially balanced engines. Mazda’s commemorative release.

For a separate application within the same generation, see the Japanese base-grade 1308 cc RENESIS record. Specifications from that application or from export-market anniversary editions should not be assumed to describe this Japanese variant.
