Mazda MX-5 Miata NC Power Retractable Hard Top
Introduced in 2006, the NC Power Retractable Hard Top combined Mazda’s two-seat roadster layout with an electrically folding roof that preserved luggage space. Regional names included Roadster RHT and MX-5 Roadster Coupe.
An electrically folding roof for the NC
The Power Retractable Hard Top was a body variant of the third-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata (NC), offered alongside the fabric-roof roadster. It retained two seats and rear-wheel drive while adding a permanently installed roof that folded electrically behind the occupants. Mazda’s chronology records its introduction in August 2006. Mazda MX-5 chronology.
Mazda used different names across markets: Roadster Power Retractable Hard Top in Japan, MX-5 Roadster Coupe in Europe, and MX-5 Miata Power Retractable Hard Top in North America. These names describe the same basic roof configuration, rather than separate generations. Japanese documentation used RHT; American material used PRHT. Mazda’s launch announcement.
Introduction and production context
The NC manufacturing programme began at Mazda’s Ujina No. 1 plant in Hiroshima, Japan, on 17 May 2005. This establishes the generation’s production origin; the retractable-hardtop derivative followed the original soft-top car. Mazda’s NC production announcement.
For the American 2007 model programme, Mazda’s specification deck lists June 2006 as the PRHT production-start timing. Japanese retail sales began on 23 August 2006. The calendar-year introduction and American model-year designation therefore describe different milestones. 2007 US specification deck, page 1, Japanese launch release.
The retractable-hardtop NC remained in the American 2015 model-year range. Mazda listed May 2014 production-start timing for that regular model-year programme, separately from June 2014 for the anniversary edition. Those dates do not establish the last assembly date of the NC hardtop. 2015 US specification deck, page 1.
Roof design and engineering
The folding assembly used front and middle roof sections together with a rear-window section. Lightweight plastic construction helped contain the additional mass. The mechanism required the driver to release a central latch before powered operation; contemporary documentation described a 12-second operating cycle. The roof occupied a compartment behind the seats without reducing boot space. RAC’s Roadster Coupe technical overview.
Mazda reshaped the rear deck and rear-wing area to accommodate the roof and revised the suspension for the derivative. The closed roof was also intended to improve acoustic comfort. Mazda’s engineering description.
The American specification deck identifies the underlying chassis as rear-wheel drive with double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement. The roof change therefore extended the NC’s body choices while retaining its roadster architecture. 2007 US specification deck, page 14.
Engines, grades and regional names
Japan, August 2006: The launch grades were ROADSTER RHT, RS RHT and VS RHT, all with the 1,998 cc LF-VE four-cylinder engine. The base grade offered five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission; RS RHT used a six-speed manual, while VS RHT offered six-speed manual or automatic. These combinations describe the Japanese launch range. Japanese launch specifications.
United States, 2007 model year: PRHT grades were Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. They used the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre MZR four-cylinder engine. The specification deck distinguishes manual and automatic ratings and excludes the six-speed automatic from PRHT Sport. Japanese gearbox combinations should therefore not be transferred to American cars. 2007 US specification deck, pages 1 and 14.
United Kingdom: The Roadster Coupe range included 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol versions. The European Coupe name referred to the folding-hardtop body and did not identify a single engine or equipment grade. RAC’s UK range overview.
Grade names also changed during production. For the US 2015 model year, Mazda listed Club, Grand Touring and the 25th Anniversary Edition under PRHT. Club had a black roof, while the regular Grand Touring used a body-colour roof. These later specifications should not be read back into the launch range. 2015 US specification deck, pages 1–3.
Revisions within the NC generation
The Japanese facelift went on sale on 9 December 2008. It brought a five-point grille, revised exterior and interior details, suspension changes and powertrain refinements. Mazda specifically described quieter RHT models with additional exterior differentiation. Japanese manual-transmission grades gained a higher rev limit. These changes remained within the NC generation. December 2008 release.
A further Japanese update followed on 5 July 2012. It revised the front styling and used silver and chrome details to distinguish the RHT’s presentation from the soft top. Changes also included manual-model throttle response, brake assistance and an active bonnet for pedestrian protection. This equipment description applies to Mazda’s Japanese announcement; export specifications and introduction dates require their own market documentation. July 2012 release.
Historical context
The retractable hardtop broadened the NC’s appeal by combining an enclosed roof with open-air driving and an unaffected luggage compartment. Its significance lies in that practical extension of the established roadster concept, rather than in a separate generation or a unique engine family. This interpretation follows the roof’s documented packaging and the contemporary assessment of its appeal. RAC’s historical overview.
The fourth-generation MX-5 (ND) entered production on 5 March 2015. That successor milestone does not establish an exact final NC PRHT build date or the last retail delivery in every market. Mazda’s ND production announcement.
