Mazda MX-5 Miata NC NR-A LF-VE 1998 cc Engine

The 1,998 cc LF-VE powered the Japanese NC NR-A with 170 PS and a five-speed manual at launch.

Application and identity

The LF-VE was the 1,998 cc engine specified for the Japanese-market NC NR-A. Mazda announced sales for early April 2006. Locally called Roadster, this application belongs beneath the NR-A variant of the third-generation MX-5.

Japanese launch specification

  • Configuration: water-cooled inline-four, DOHC, 16 valves.
  • Displacement: 1,998 cc.
  • Compression ratio: 10.8:1.
  • Output: 125 kW (170 PS) at 6,700 rpm.
  • Torque: 189 Nm at 5,000 rpm.
  • Fuel system: electronic gasoline injection; premium unleaded fuel.
  • Valve control: variable valve timing.
  • Transmission: five-speed manual.

These are the application-specific figures in Mazda’s March 2006 announcement.

Production context

Production of the third-generation MX-5 began on 17 May 2005 at Mazda’s Ujina No.1 plant in Hiroshima, Japan. That date concerns the generation’s vehicle assembly, rather than the later NR-A introduction or the start of LF-VE engine manufacture. Mazda’s production announcement identifies the first car as a North American limited edition with a six-speed manual; its specification must remain separate from this Japanese five-speed application.

Role and specification boundaries

The NR-A combined this powertrain with adjustable Bilstein dampers, a torque-sensing limited-slip differential and suspension bracing. It provided a basis for Japanese one-make racing after installation of the required racing kit.

This record documents the launch specification. The cited evidence does not establish the engine assembly location, application end date or specifications of later revisions. April 2006 denotes the announced sales timing, not a model-year designation.
