Mazda Luce Fourth Generation (1981)
The fourth-generation Luce introduced a new saloon and four-door hardtop range in October 1981. Rotary versions followed separately, with a turbocharged rotary joining during 1982.
The fourth-generation Luce
The fourth-generation Mazda Luce, generally identified as the HB series, was a Japanese executive-car range produced during 1981–1986. It occupied the next generation in the Luce line after the Luce Legato. Mazda dates the full redesign to October 1981; this is a calendar introduction date, not a universal export model-year designation. The fifth generation followed in September 1986.
The HB belongs within the Japan-built Luce family, whose assembly location is recorded as Hiroshima. Export examples were associated with the Mazda 929 name, but export dates and specifications should be distinguished from the Japanese Luce chronology. Bodies and engine range
Mazda identifies two bodies: a four-door saloon and a four-door hardtop, the latter distinguished by its wrap-around rear window. These are body-style alternatives within the generation.
Mazda’s historical overview lists a 1.8-litre VC petrol engine, 2.0-litre MA petrol and MA EGI fuel-injected engines, a 2.2-litre diesel, and a six-port-induction 12A rotary. It specifically dates the rotary version to November 1981, after the redesign. This range-level list does not establish that every engine was available in every body, trim or market at launch. The saloon’s 2.0-litre EGI addition is separately recorded in September 1982. Source: Mazda, History 1980–1989.
Development and chronology
A rotary turbo joined during 1982, but Mazda’s retrospective sources disagree on the month: the Japanese Luce lineage gives August, while its English corporate history specifies October for the Luce. Neither date should be silently substituted for the October 1981 generation introduction. Sources: Luce lineage and corporate history.
The Japanese chronology records a minor change in October 1983, followed by a taxi update in December, and the addition of the Genteel series in May 1985. These were developments within the fourth generation. September 1986 marks the next full redesign, rather than another facelift. The lineage also lists Luce van events separately; their appearance alongside passenger-car milestones does not establish a fourth-generation HB estate body. Source: Mazda’s Luce lineage.
Historical significance
The combination of petrol, diesel and rotary choices illustrates the Luce’s breadth within Mazda’s passenger-car range. Its later turbocharged rotary also makes this generation part of Mazda’s early application of turbocharging to production rotary engines. That significance belongs to the generation’s development over time, rather than to a single launch specification. Source: Mazda’s corporate history.
