Mazda Luce Fifth Generation (1986)
The fifth-generation Luce introduced Mazda’s first V6 application in September 1986 while retaining a turbocharged rotary option. Its private-car history and longer taxi service programme require separate timelines.
The fifth-generation Luce
Introduced in September 1986, the fifth generation of the Mazda Luce marked Mazda’s first application of a V6 engine. Mazda’s English-language historical timeline also identifies it as the Mazda 929, its export identity. The date describes the Japanese introduction in a calendar year; it does not establish a common model year or launch date for every export market. Mazda’s centenary timeline.
Known as the HC series, this Japanese-built generation occupied the luxury end of Mazda’s passenger-car range. Four-door sedan and four-door hardtop bodies belonged to the programme. The model history identifies Hiroshima as the Luce’s assembly location. Model history.
Luxury and rotary engineering
The V6 introduction did not end the Luce’s rotary-engine role. Mazda’s rotary history describes the fifth-generation car as combining luxury-saloon comfort with rotary performance. Its documented turbocharged 13B version paired a two-rotor engine with a four-speed automatic transmission. Mazda also describes a rigid monocoque, front struts and its E-link rear suspension in this account of the rotary model.
These details describe the documented rotary configuration; they should not be treated as a universal specification for every V6, taxi or export car. The same publication gives the Luce rotary entry a 1986–1991 date range. Mazda rotary-engine history, “Luce 1986–1991”.
Development chronology
Mazda’s Japanese archive records the following calendar dates:
- September 1986: full redesign and introduction of Mazda’s first V6 application.
- August 1987: addition of a 3.0-litre V6 version.
- September 1988: a minor model change, including adoption of DOHC for the 3.0-litre V6.
The 3.0-litre addition therefore belongs to the subsequent development of the generation, rather than its September 1986 launch specification. The 1988 revision remains within the fifth generation. Mazda Luce chronology.
Private cars and taxis
The taxi chronology must be kept separate. Mazda lists a purpose-designed commercial-use 2000 LPG addition in October 1986, followed by taxi revisions in October 1988, June 1989 and July 1993. Its final Luce production-end entry is December 1995.
That broad nameplate endpoint does not establish continued production of the private-car or rotary range until 1995. The rotary history’s 1986–1991 range and the archive’s later taxi entries describe different scopes. Similarly, the archive’s August 1987 Luce van discontinuation does not establish a fifth-generation HC van. Mazda Luce chronology.
Position in Mazda history
Mazda places this generation within a period of expanding investment in luxury cars, V6-powered sedans and higher-value products. Its historical significance lies in bringing Mazda’s new V6 direction into the established Luce line while a rotary-powered luxury version remained available. Mazda’s centenary timeline.
The export name 929 provides useful identification, but it is not a guarantee of identical equipment, engines or introduction dates. Japanese Luce, export 929 and commercial-use records should retain their own market and specification boundaries.
