Mazda Capella Fifth Generation Cargo Station Wagon
Introduced in 1988, the Capella Cargo brought seven-seat versatility to the fifth-generation Capella. Its wagon lineage continued through a 1994 revision and renaming before replacement in 1997.
A passenger-oriented Capella wagon
The Capella Cargo was the station-wagon variant added in 1988 to the fifth-generation Mazda Capella, which had debuted the previous year. Mazda’s own history identifies the Cargo as a seven-seat addition to the range. This record follows that passenger-wagon branch, including its later Capella Wagon continuation; specifications below concern the Japanese market unless stated otherwise. Mazda’s Capella history establishes its place in the model family.
Body design and seating
Mazda developed the curved rear window with a supplier to give the Cargo a more passenger-car-like appearance. This attention to the rear bodywork was a distinctive part of the wagon’s development. Mazda’s historical account.
The five-door body combined a raised rear roof section with a stowable third-row seat and a split-folding second row. These arrangements allowed the passenger and luggage space to be adapted to different uses. Seven-seat capability was a defining feature, but seating capacity must still be checked against the particular grade and date. Carsensor’s Cargo catalogue.
Japanese-market development
Carsensor describes the initial Japanese passenger wagon with a 1.8-litre SOHC four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive and either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Its chronology records the addition in October 1990 of a 2.0-litre DOHC petrol GT with full-time four-wheel drive and a front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre pressure-wave-supercharged diesel. An August 1992 revision brought a DOHC 1.8-litre engine, a four-wheel-drive diesel option and changes to the grille and upholstery. These were successive range developments, not a single specification shared by every Cargo. Carsensor’s model chronology.
Continuation as the Capella Wagon
GAZOO dates the substantially revised and renamed Capella Wagon to October 1994 and explicitly describes it as a development of the preceding Cargo. Its catalogue covers this wagon through November 1997. The available engines included 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol fours and a 2.0-litre pressure-wave-supercharged diesel.
Seating and drivetrain remained grade-specific. For October 1994, GAZOO lists the front-wheel-drive 1.8-litre SX and diesel SX with seven seats, while the listed four-wheel-drive versions have five. The Cargo’s seven-seat identity therefore should not be applied indiscriminately to every later wagon. GAZOO’s 1994–1997 Capella Wagon catalogue.
Mazda announced a completely redesigned Capella Wagon in Japan on 17 November 1997. That announcement identifies the successor’s introduction, rather than an exact final assembly date for the outgoing wagon. Mazda’s successor launch announcement.
Chronology and historical significance
The secure introduction year is 1988. Secondary catalogues differ on the month: Carsensor uses February, whereas GAZOO’s Capella overview says March. Mazda’s own retrospective gives only the year, which is retained here. These are calendar dates, not universal export model-year designations. Carsensor, GAZOO.
The Cargo name and the underlying wagon lineage also need separate treatment. Carsensor groups Cargo entries through July 1995, while GAZOO records the revised Capella Wagon from October 1994. Those catalogue boundaries do not establish one definitive production cutoff. The later wagon is documented into 1997 and should not inherit a sedan end date. GAZOO’s wagon chronology.
Within the Capella model line, the Cargo’s significance lies in combining passenger-car styling with adaptable seating and establishing a wagon branch that continued beyond its original naming period. The cited sources do not establish a wagon-specific assembly plant or exact final production day.
