Mazda Capella Fifth Generation (1987)
Introduced in May 1987, the fifth-generation Capella expanded Mazda's family-car range with speed-sensitive four-wheel steering and a Cargo wagon whose development continued into the 1990s.
Identity and introduction
The fifth-generation Mazda Capella debuted in Japan in May 1987. This record follows Mazda’s own generation numbering; 1987 identifies its introduction, rather than a single model-year specification. Mazda’s launch chronology lists a four-door sedan, the two-door C2 coupé and the five-door CG. Export names included 626, with MX-6 used for the coupé. Mazda’s contemporary-model archive confirms the fifth-generation designation and May 1987 date.
Engineering and range development
Mazda describes predictable, linear dynamic response as a development objective. Speed-sensitive four-wheel steering was a prominent innovation, and the company’s retrospective records individual inspection of every 4WS unit. Four-wheel steering concerns steering behaviour; it must be distinguished from the full-time four-wheel-drive system also offered within the range. Mazda’s Capella history documents these developments.
Mazda’s chronology places the introduction of the RF2000 diesel with a pressure-wave supercharger, and full-time four-wheel-drive models, in July 1987. These were range additions, not specifications shared by every launch car. Engine, drivetrain and steering equipment therefore require identification by market and variant. Mazda’s 1980–1989 chronology supplies the introduction sequence.
Cargo wagon and commercial van
The Capella Cargo joined the Japanese range in February 1988, with wagon and van versions. Mazda’s retrospective describes a seven-seat station wagon and attention to its curved rear window, developed with a supplier to give the utility body a passenger-car appearance. Seating and equipment should not be transferred indiscriminately between the passenger wagon and commercial van. Mazda’s chronology dates the addition; its Capella retrospective explains the wagon’s design.
Different body styles, different timelines
A single end date would obscure the range’s development. Mazda introduced the Cronos, also identified as a 626 in its export chronology, in October 1991, followed by a new MX-6 in January 1992. These successor introductions are not exact production-stop dates for every earlier body style or market.
The Cargo line continued separately. In October 1994, Mazda renamed it Capella Wagon; the listed engine choices included a 1.8-litre DOHC petrol engine and a 2.0-litre pressure-wave-supercharged diesel. Meanwhile, Mazda’s sixth-generation Capella had appeared in August 1994. These overlapping developments explain why the wagon cannot simply inherit the sedan’s generation dates. Mazda’s 1990–1999 chronology distinguishes these events.
A completely redesigned Capella Wagon was introduced in Japan on 17 November 1997. That documented replacement milestone should not be mistaken for a verified final assembly date for the preceding wagon. Mazda’s launch announcement establishes the new wagon’s introduction.
Production and historical significance
The generation also supported Mazda’s overseas manufacturing expansion. Mazda identifies the US-built MX-6 as the fifth-generation Capella derivative with which its Mazda Motor Manufacturing USA operation began production. Its corporate chronology dates the start of vehicle production there to September 1987. This establishes American production of the coupé derivative, not American manufacture of every Capella body style. Mazda’s retrospective and corporate chronology provide the connection.
The generation’s historical importance lies in combining steering and drivetrain development with a broader body range and an expanded overseas manufacturing presence. Its long-lived wagon also illustrates how one branch of a model family could continue while the sedan and coupé lines moved on.
