Ford Mustang second generation (1974–1978)
The compact Mustang II that returned the model to smaller dimensions during the fuel-conscious 1970s.
Overview
Ford replaced the increasingly large original Mustang with the substantially smaller Mustang II for the 1974 model year. Developed around Ford’s subcompact-car architecture, it had a shorter wheelbase, lower weight and more formal 1970s styling. Its arrival coincided with the 1973 oil crisis, making its emphasis on economy particularly timely.
The range consisted of a two-door notchback and a three-door hatchback. Standard and Ghia notchbacks emphasised everyday comfort, while the hatchback was the basis for the sportier Mach 1. Despite its reduced dimensions, the Mustang II retained a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and visual cues such as the long bonnet, short deck and side sculpting.
Engines and development
At launch, engine choices were a 2.3-litre four-cylinder and an optional 2.8-litre V6. The absence of a V8 made 1974 unique in Mustang history, but a 302-cubic-inch (5.0-litre) V8 returned for 1975. Depending on model year and specification, buyers could choose manual or automatic transmissions.
Ford expanded the appearance and performance catalogue as the generation matured. The Cobra II arrived for 1976 with prominent stripes, spoilers and a bonnet scoop, while the 1978 King Cobra gave the final-year hatchback an especially elaborate graphics and aerodynamic package.
Place in Mustang history
The Mustang II traded some of its predecessor’s outright performance image for more manageable size, improved refinement and fuel-conscious engines. Ford sold approximately 386,000 examples for 1974, demonstrating the demand for a smaller Mustang. The generation lasted five model years before the new Fox-platform car replaced it for 1979.
