Ford Mustang third generation (1979–1993)
The long-running Fox-platform Mustang that evolved from crisp 1970s styling into the 5.0-era GT and SVT Cobra.
Overview
The third-generation Mustang arrived for 1979 on Ford’s rear-wheel-drive Fox platform. It was longer and roomier than the Mustang II yet approximately 200 pounds lighter. Crisp, European-influenced lines, rectangular headlamps and a more practical cabin distinguished the new car from both earlier generations.
Ford offered notchback coupe and hatchback bodies at launch, with four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8 engines across the range. A turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder also appeared at intervals. The body remained in production for 15 model years, making this the longest-running Mustang generation.
Performance revival
After several years of tightening emissions controls and modest outputs, the Mustang’s performance identity strengthened during the 1980s. The GT name returned for 1982 together with a more powerful 5.0-litre V8. A convertible rejoined the catalogue for 1983, ending a ten-year absence.
The Mustang SVO, sold from 1984 to 1986, combined an intercooled turbocharged four-cylinder engine with upgraded suspension, brakes and distinctive bodywork. For 1986 the 5.0-litre V8 adopted sequential electronic fuel injection, helping the engine become a defining feature of later Fox Mustangs.
Later development
A major 1987 facelift replaced the earlier front treatment with flush aerodynamic headlamps and cleaner bodywork. The simplified range centred on LX and GT models, available in notchback, hatchback and convertible forms. The lighter-looking LX 5.0 became an especially popular route to V8 performance.
Ford closed the generation in 1993 with the first Mustang developed by its Special Vehicle Team. The limited-production SVT Cobra used a higher-output 5.0-litre V8 with chassis and braking upgrades, while the more focused Cobra R was built in very small numbers for competition-minded owners.
