Fiat Nuova 500 R 594 cc Production Years (1972–1975)
The 594 cc Fiat 500 R completed the Nuova 500 saloon’s production history during 1972–1975, overlapping with the newer Fiat 126.
Scope of this record
This chronology covers the 1972–1975 calendar production period of the Fiat Nuova 500 R 594 cc air-cooled twin. It belongs beneath that engine record within the 500 R Rinnovata variant, rather than representing a separate generation.
The dates describe production of this engine-and-variant combination. They should not be read as universal export model years, registration dates or the production life of every vehicle using a related engine.
1972: introduction and transition
The 500 R made its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1972. Its name, Rinnovata, meant renewed. The 594 cc engine accompanied a deliberately simple specification: an F-derived dashboard and speedometer, simplified interior fittings and wheels without hubcaps. Stellantis Heritage identifies Termini Imerese in Sicily as its production location. See the manufacturer’s 500 R historical account.
Fiat’s earlier retrospective explains that the R used the 126’s 594 cc engine in a lower-output specification while retaining the old 500 gearbox. Shared displacement therefore does not justify treating the two cars’ specifications as interchangeable.
1973–1974: continued production
The R continued through 1973 and 1974 alongside the newer Fiat 126. These are intervening calendar years within the documented 1972–1975 production span, not evidence of separate annual versions. The cited histories do not establish a distinct facelift or engine revision for either year.
Within the Nuova 500 generation, the R formed the final saloon phase after the 500 F and 500 L Lusso. Its reduced equipment contrasted with the preceding L.
1975: final production
Production ended in 1975. Fiat’s 2007 historical retrospective dates the final Nuova 500 to 4 August 1975, at the SicilFiat plant in Termini Imerese. That precise day is attributed to this source; the calendar-year endpoint is the basis of this record.
The endpoint applies to the R saloon, not the Giardiniera estate: Stellantis Heritage records Giardiniera production continuing under Autobianchi until 1977. The R’s significance lies in completing the original Nuova 500 saloon’s evolution while Fiat’s small-car range moved towards the 126.
