Fiat Nuova 500 R Rinnovata (1972–1975)
Introduced in 1972 alongside the Fiat 126, the 500 R combined a larger engine with simplified equipment and continued the Nuova 500 saloon into 1975.
The final Nuova 500 saloon
The Fiat 500 R was the final saloon development of the Nuova 500 generation. Its suffix meant Rinnovata, or renewed. Presented at the 1972 Turin Motor Show alongside its successor, the Fiat 126, it remained in production until 1975. These dates describe its production period, rather than individual market model years. Fiat’s historical account places the R at the close of the original 500’s evolution.
Engine and transmission
The R adopted the 126’s 594 cc engine in a lower-output specification while retaining the older 500 gearbox. Consequently, specifications for the contemporary 126 should not be transferred wholesale to this variant. Stellantis Heritage records a Weber 24 carburettor and reinforced half-shafts.
Simplified appearance and equipment
The R followed the 500 F and 500 L Lusso, returning to simpler equipment than the L. It reused the F-style dashboard and speedometer with black plastic finishes. Smooth vinyl seat coverings, a fixed rear backrest and fewer central switches reinforced the functional interior. Externally, four-slot wheels exposed their bolts and dispensed with hubcaps. These details are described in the manufacturer’s heritage account.
Production and historical significance
The R was produced at Termini Imerese in Sicily, Italy, and the Nuova 500 saloon’s production ended there in summer 1975. Its overlap with the 126 illustrates Fiat’s gradual transition from the established 500 to its replacement. The R belongs within the original generation, rather than constituting a separate generation. Fiat’s retrospective documents this succession.
Evidence and scope
The cited manufacturer retrospectives disagree on the R’s production total, so no total is adopted here. This record concerns the standard Italian saloon variant; it does not assign unverified export-market specifications or include the separate Giardiniera estate.
