Fiat Nuova 500 R 594 cc Air-Cooled Twin

The final Nuova 500 variant adopted the Fiat 126’s 594 cc engine in a lower-output installation while retaining the 500 gearbox.

The final Nuova 500 engine application

The 594 cc air-cooled twin powered the Fiat Nuova 500 R Rinnovata, the final variant of the original Nuova 500 generation. Its 1972–1975 dates describe the production period of this vehicle application, rather than the entire life of the related engine family.

Fiat introduced the R at the Turin Motor Show in 1972. The name Rinnovata meant renewed: the larger engine formed part of an update that kept the established small car in production alongside its successor. Stellantis Heritage’s retrospective identifies it as the last series of the historic 500.

594 cc, with a distinct 500 R output

The installation retained the rear-mounted, air-cooled two-cylinder layout. Fiat’s 2007 history explicitly identifies the engine as the 594 cc unit shared with the 126, but with reduced output in the 500 R. The car also retained the earlier 500 gearbox.

Power units require care. The English-language Fiat archive account gives 18 bhp for the 500 R and 23 bhp for the 126. The later German-language Heritage account describes the 500 R as 13 kW (18 PS). These are the sources’ own rounded descriptions, not exact interchangeable conversions or evidence of different market versions. The 126 figure must not be assigned to this application.

Development and production context

Stellantis Heritage describes the revised twin as more flexible and smoother in operation. Its account also records reinforced driveshafts and a starter positioned on the right-hand side. These details concern the R’s installed powertrain; they should not be generalized to every engine sharing its displacement.

The 500 R remained in Italian production until 1975. Fiat’s historical account places the end of Nuova 500 vehicle assembly at SicilFiat’s Termini Imerese plant in Sicily. That identifies a vehicle assembly location, rather than establishing where every engine was manufactured. Fiat’s production history supplies that distinction’s vehicle-side evidence.

Place in the model line

Viewed together, the manufacturer accounts show the 594 cc installation as a mechanical link between the outgoing 500 and the incoming 126. Its significance lies in adapting successor-model machinery to the final version of an established car while preserving an application-specific output and transmission.

For an earlier engine application within the same generation, see the 500 D 499.5 cc air-cooled twin. Body, trim and broader production history belong with the 500 R variant record.
