Fiat 128 Original Italian Generation Sport Coupé SL 1116 cc Engine
The smaller Sport Coupé SL engine used a distinct sporting tune.
Application and chronology
The 1,116 cc engine powered the Sport Coupé SL, introduced in November 1971. SL denoted Sport Luxury equipment, available with either engine capacity. The original coupé gave way to the 3P in 1975; these calendar milestones do not establish individual engine-production dates.
Coupé-specific engineering
The 128’s transverse inline-four architecture used a belt-driven single overhead camshaft and front-wheel drive. Stellantis quotes 64 hp for the 1,116 cc coupé, distinct from the saloon’s 55 hp. Its unspecified measurement standard is retained without conversion. The larger coupé engine delivered 75 hp.
Production context and significance
Stellantis places the beginning of Italian 128 production at Rivalta, without identifying a separate engine factory. This smaller sporting application illustrates how Fiat adapted family-car engineering to a dedicated coupé. Export availability and market-specific tuning require separate documentation.
