Fiat 128 Original Italian Generation Sport Coupé SL
The Sport Luxury version of the 128 coupé combined four round headlights with a choice of two engines.
Identity and chronology
Introduced at the Turin Motor Show in November 1971, the Fiat 128 Sport Coupé SL belonged to the original Italian generation. SL meant Sport Luxury: an equipment designation available with either the 1,116 cc or 1,290 cc engine.
The original Sport Coupé was replaced by the tailgate-equipped 128 3P in 1975. The parent generation’s 1969–1985 dates therefore do not describe this variant’s lifespan. These are calendar chronology dates, not universal export model-year boundaries. Source: Stellantis Heritage.
Design and place in the range
Fiat Centro Stile shortened the wheelbase and reinforced the floor for the coupé. Its sloping rear glass terminated above a short boot. Four round headlights and additional chrome distinguished SL from the rectangular-headlamp S.
Alongside the saloon-bodied 128 Rally, it illustrates the 128’s expansion into sporting derivatives. Stellantis identifies Rivalta as the starting point of Italian 128 production, without separately documenting SL assembly in its overview. Source: Stellantis Heritage.
Engineering and export specifications
Fiat’s US brochure catalogued as 1975 describes the export car as the 128 Sport L Coupe. It lists a 1,290 cc engine, four-speed synchromesh transmission, front-wheel drive, independent suspension, front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering. Its interior description includes bucket seats, carpeting, a sports console and full instrumentation. Source: Fiat US brochure.
That documentation establishes a specific US offering; it does not establish US availability of the smaller engine. Equipment, emissions specifications and power ratings should be checked against documentation for the particular market and year. No universal horsepower or performance figure is assigned here.
