Identity and scope

This generation record groups the original Italian-built Fiat 128 and its styling revisions. It excludes overseas production from its date range; individual trims and engines are not separate generations here.

Introduced in spring 1969 to replace the 1100 R, the compact family car offered two- and four-door saloons, followed that autumn by a three-door estate. Stellantis Heritage.

Engineering

Following Autobianchi Primula experience, the 128 combined front-wheel drive with a transverse engine and adjacent gearbox. Its initial 1,116 cc four-cylinder used a belt-driven overhead camshaft. Independent suspension, front disc brakes and rear drums completed the layout. Heritage technical history.

Body styles and revisions

The 1971 Rally paired two-door saloon bodywork with a 1,290 cc engine. The Sport Coupé followed that year on a shorter wheelbase, offering 1,116 and 1,290 cc engines in S and SL trims. The hatchback 3P replaced it in 1975.

Heritage dates saloon revisions to 1972, the rectangular-headlamp Special to 1974, and the third series with increased plastic bumper content to 1976. These changes sit within this generation rather than defining new generations. Heritage chronology.

Italian production and the date boundary

Production began at Rivalta. The title retains 1985 from the Heritage model history, but the endpoint is disputed.

A Stellantis release dated 13 June 2025 instead specifies Rivalta production from 1969 to 1983. These accounts do not establish whether the discrepancy reflects manufacture versus continued sales, so that explanation is not assumed. The title’s years are a historical scope label, not a verified model-year sequence.

The same release documents continued production in South America, Egypt and Yugoslavia into the 1990s. Those overseas histories require their own market-specific treatment and do not extend this Italian record.

Historical significance

Stellantis associates the 128 with Dante Giacosa’s development of compact front-drive packaging: the concentrated powertrain freed passenger space and reduced mechanical complexity. Its 1970 Car of the Year award recognised a design that became an important reference for European compact cars. Stellantis historical assessment.
