Overview

BMW introduced the 3 Series model family in 1975 as the successor to the 02 Series. E21 is BMW’s internal designation for its first generation, rather than the whole model family. Current coverage focuses on these E21 beginnings. BMW’s historical account.

E21: early engines and body styles

BMW’s account of the 1975 launch lists four-cylinder petrol models: the carburettor-equipped 316, 318 and 320, and the fuel-injected 320i. It does not establish availability in every national market. The E21 also featured dashboard controls angled towards the driver. BMW’s launch history.

The six-cylinder 320, also known as the 320/6, and 323i appeared at the Frankfurt motor show in autumn 1977. This dates their presentation in Germany; it does not establish sales availability in every market. BMW Group Classic: six-cylinder 320.

BMW’s E21 body was a two-door saloon. Coachbuilder Baur offered the Topcabriolet conversion, combining opening roof sections with retained body sides and a roll bar. These details describe the E21, rather than all later 3 Series generations. BMW Group Classic: Baur Topcabriolet.
