Volvo 850
The Volvo 850 combined saloon and estate body styles with transverse five-cylinder engineering; its performance range included the distinct T-5R and 850 R.
Overview
The Volvo 850 family comprised a four-door saloon (sedan) and five-door estate (wagon). Its transverse inline-five engine was mounted across the car and initially drove the front wheels. Other engineering features included Delta-link rear suspension, integrated Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and automatically height-adjusting front seat belts. Volvo model overview.
Developed through Volvo’s Galaxy project, the 850 GLT launched on 11 June 1991 with a naturally aspirated, 20-valve engine rated by Volvo at 170 hp. The less powerful 10-valve GLE followed in summer 1992 for model year 1993. Volvo anniversary history.
Range overview
The five-cylinder range included naturally aspirated petrol, turbocharged petrol and direct-injection diesel engines. T-5R
The limited-production T-5R debuted at Geneva in 1994. Retaining the qualified figure of up to 240 horsepower follows Volvo’s anniversary account, which uses hp without identifying its measurement standard, market specification or operating conditions. 850 R
The series-production 850 R followed in saloon and estate forms. Volvo’s model overview dates its arrival to 1995, while the anniversary account places it among the 1996 models. These references distinguish introduction from model-year availability, without establishing every market’s sales dates. The T-5R figure above is not an 850 R specification. Production, sales and model years
Volvo’s anniversary account identifies 1996 as the final production year for the 850 badge and November 1996 as the launch of the S70 saloon and V70 estate for model year 1997. It separately reports 716,903 cars sold during 1991–1997. Volvo anniversary history.
However, Volvo’s model overview labels 716,903 as production and dates the family 1991–1996. The total is therefore retained as Volvo’s reported production figure, with the conflicting sales description explicitly acknowledged.
