Volkswagen Beetle Type 1 (1945–2003)
The air-cooled, rear-engined original whose long production life made it one of the world's most familiar cars.
Overview
The car later known around the world as the Beetle entered civilian series production at Wolfsburg on 27 December 1945. Officially the Volkswagen Type 1, it combined a rounded steel body with a platform chassis, torsion-bar suspension and an air-cooled flat-four engine mounted behind the passenger compartment.
British military authorities initially directed the damaged Wolfsburg factory and placed an order for 20,000 vehicles. Production remained modest during the immediate post-war years, but the establishment of export networks and the transfer of the company into German control helped turn the Type 1 into a major international product.
Body and engineering
The standard two-door saloon was joined by specialist bodies using the same basic platform. Karmann built the best-known four-seat cabriolet, while Hebmüller briefly produced a two-seat open model. The separable body and platform also supported derivatives including the Karmann Ghia and numerous coachbuilt vehicles.
Development was continuous even though the silhouette changed gradually. Engine capacity grew through 1.1-, 1.2-, 1.3-, 1.5- and 1.6-litre versions. Larger windows, improved brakes, revised gearboxes, 12-volt electrics and detail changes kept the car usable as traffic speeds and customer expectations increased.
1302 and 1303
The 1302 introduced MacPherson-strut front suspension for 1970, creating more luggage space while retaining the torsion-bar rear suspension and rear-mounted engine. Its 1303 successor added a curved windscreen, shorter bonnet and a redesigned dashboard for 1972. Traditional torsion-bar-front-axle models continued alongside them in many markets.
German saloon production ended at Emden in 1978, and Karmann completed the final German cabriolet in 1980. Production continued in countries including Brazil and Mexico. The last Mexican-built 1600i left Puebla on 30 July 2003, taking total Type 1 production to 21,529,464.
