Volkswagen New Beetle (1997–2010)
A Golf-based, front-engined reinterpretation that helped establish retro design as a modern automotive trend.
Overview
The New Beetle translated the Type 1’s instantly recognisable form into a modern front-engined compact car. Its origins lay in the Concept 1 show car created by designers J Mays and Freeman Thomas at Volkswagen’s California design studio and unveiled at the 1994 Detroit motor show.
Public enthusiasm encouraged Volkswagen to develop a production version. Manufacture began at Puebla, Mexico, on 1 October 1997, and the finished New Beetle made its official world premiere in Detroit on 5 January 1998.
Design and engineering
Three intersecting arches defined the profile, while separate-looking wings, round headlamps, running-board-like sills and a dashboard flower vase referred to the classic Beetle. Beneath the body, however, the layout was entirely contemporary.
The New Beetle shared its basic platform and major components with the fourth-generation Golf. Water-cooled petrol and diesel engines were mounted transversely at the front and normally drove the front wheels. Depending on market and model year, the range included four-, five- and six-cylinder engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and turbocharged petrol and diesel choices.
Variants
The production range began with the three-door hatchback. A fabric-roof New Beetle Cabriolet joined it in 2003, using additional body reinforcement and a folding roof that sat above the rear bodywork. A modest 2005 model update brought reshaped wings, bumpers and lamps without altering the basic silhouette.
At the top of the range, the limited 2001 New Beetle RSi combined a 165 kW (224 PS) 3.2-litre VR6 with four-wheel drive, widened bodywork and extensive chassis changes. Only 250 production examples were built.
Production ended in July 2010 after almost 1.2 million New Beetles. Its combination of modern Golf engineering and deliberate visual references helped make retro-inspired design a significant late-1990s trend.
