Saab
A Swedish manufacturer whose front-wheel-drive cars, distinctive hatchbacks, safety engineering and production turbocharging grew from an aircraft company's post-war diversification.
Historical overview
Saab was a Swedish automobile marque centred on Trollhättan. Its car history began inside Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, the aircraft manufacturer founded on 2 April 1937, and developed into a small but internationally recognised range of front-wheel-drive passenger cars. Series production ran from December 1949 until Saab Automobile’s final production crisis and bankruptcy in December 2011, although the corporate identity and the right to use the Saab name changed several times during that span.
The marque is historically important for combining compact packaging, aerodynamic thinking, winter-oriented development, safety work and practical body styles. Early cars used two-stroke engines; later ranges moved through V4 and inline-four power, then made controlled turbocharging a central part of Saab’s identity. These were separate technical eras rather than specifications shared by every Saab.
From aircraft to the Saab 92
Saab was established to build aircraft for Sweden. With military demand expected to fall after the Second World War, the company considered civilian products that could use its workforce and Trollhättan facilities. The car project began in 1945. Engineer Gunnar Ljungström led the vehicle concept and Sixten Sason shaped its body; a running prototype, later known as Saab 92001 or Ursaab, was tested in 1946.
Saab presented its first car to the press in Linköping on 10 June 1947. The vehicle was called the Saab 92, but that presentation date was not the start of customer production. Series manufacture began at Trollhättan on 12 December 1949, and deliveries followed in 1950. The compact, rounded body, front-wheel drive and transverse two-cylinder two-stroke powertrain formed the first production Saab package.
The Saab 93 arrived for the 1956 model year with a three-cylinder two-stroke engine. The 95 estate and 96 saloon broadened the family in 1959–1960, while the small Sonett sports cars used related components in a very different body. A V4 four-stroke version followed in 1966. Consequently, “two-stroke Saab”, “V4 Saab”, 95 estate, 96 saloon and Sonett are engine, model or body-style descriptions—not interchangeable generations.
The 99, 900 and turbo era
The larger Saab 99 marked a break from the original 92-derived family. It premiered on 22 November 1967, but customer sales began with the 1969 model year. The distinction matters: its unveiling, model-year identity and production period are not the same date. The 99 established proportions and engineering themes that continued into the Saab 900, including front-wheel drive, a longitudinally installed inline-four powertrain and a practical passenger compartment.
Saab explored a turbo concept in 1976, then premiered the production Saab 99 Turbo at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1977. It went on sale as a 1978 model. Saab did not invent the turbocharger, nor was every 99 turbocharged; its contribution was to make a tractable turbocharged four-cylinder engine central to a series-production family car. Later Automatic Performance Control and Direct Ignition systems extended Saab’s work in managing boost, combustion and ignition.
The Saab 900 was presented in May 1978 and sold from that autumn as a 1979 model. It evolved the 99 architecture into two- and four-door saloons and three- and five-door hatchbacks, with a convertible joining the range later. Naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines coexisted. The 1984 Saab 900 Turbo 16 Aero was marketed as the SPG in the United States, an example of a market-specific name for a derivative rather than a separate generation.
Range, production and markets
Trollhättan remained the centre of Saab car production, but it was not the only assembly location. After Saab and Scania-Vabis combined as Saab-Scania in 1969, a joint venture with Valmet built Saab models at Uusikaupunki, Finland. Particular production sites depended on the model and year; a Finnish-built Saab was not a separate marque or necessarily a separate specification.
The 9000, presented in 1984, moved Saab into a larger market class. It came from a development collaboration with Fiat and Lancia, yet the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Alfa Romeo 164 were separately engineered model lines rather than trim versions of one car. The 9000 added five-door hatchback and four-door saloon forms to Saab’s range, while the classic 900 convertible helped make an open Saab important in export markets.
Later Saab catalogues included hatchbacks, saloons, estates, coupés, convertibles and sport-utility vehicles. Names such as Aero, Vector and Linear generally denoted equipment or performance levels within a model and market. Engine availability, emissions equipment, lighting, bumpers and trim could differ by country and model year, so a specification from a North American 900 SPG, for example, should not be assigned automatically to a European 900 Aero.
Saab’s safety work also developed over time. The company made safety belts standard in its cars in 1961 and subsequently used features including diagonally split braking circuits, padded interiors and impact-absorbing steering columns. These measures belong to particular periods and models; they should not be read as a single specification fitted retrospectively to the whole catalogue. Saab shared Sweden’s wider safety-engineering culture with manufacturers such as Volvo, but the two companies maintained distinct products and corporate histories.
Saab Automobile and General Motors
Saab’s car operation was separated from the wider Saab-Scania organisation at the turn of the 1990s. The new arrangement was announced in 1989, and Saab Automobile AB was formed in 1990 with General Motors holding 50 per cent. Investor AB held the other half after the Saab-Scania structure was dissolved; General Motors acquired full ownership in 2000. From that point, the car maker and today’s aerospace and defence company Saab AB shared a name and trademark history but were no longer under common ownership.
The second-generation 900, followed by the 9-3 and 9-5, used General Motors group architectures and components while remaining Saab-branded model lines. The first-generation 900 and its 1994 replacement are therefore different generations even though both carried the 900 name. Likewise, the later 9-3 and 9-5 ranges contained multiple body styles, engine families, facelifts and market packages that should be identified separately.
General Motors agreed to sell Saab Automobile to Spyker Cars in January 2010, and the transaction was completed on 23 February. The new ownership did not restore stable production. Saab Automobile AB, Saab Automobile Powertrain AB and Saab Automobile Tools AB were declared bankrupt by Vänersborg District Court on 19 December 2011.
After Saab Automobile
National Electric Vehicle Sweden, or NEVS, agreed to acquire most of the bankrupt car-making assets in June 2012. Saab AB licensed the Saab name for planned NEVS cars but excluded the former griffin symbol. NEVS completed a car under the licensed Saab name in September 2013. This activity did not revive the bankrupt Saab Automobile AB as the same company, and later NEVS projects should not be catalogued automatically as Saab generations.
The present Saab AB continues as an aerospace and defence company, not a car manufacturer. The Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan preserves the automotive collection from Ursaab through the last factory cars, giving the discontinued marque an institutional archive beyond surviving vehicles, clubs and specialist support.
Notable model lines
- 92, 93, 95 and 96: The compact front-wheel-drive lineage that developed from the first production car through three-cylinder two-stroke and V4 eras, with saloon and estate forms.
- Sonett: A small-volume sports-car line built in several distinct forms using components related to Saab’s contemporary small cars.
- 99: The larger model that opened a new product era and became the basis for Saab’s production-turbo breakthrough.
- 900: The long-running saloon, hatchback and convertible family most closely associated with Saab’s classic turbocharged identity; the 1978 design and 1994 replacement are separate generations.
- 9000: The larger hatchback and saloon developed through the Type Four collaboration and presented in 1984.
- 9-3 and 9-5: The principal General Motors-era families, offered across several generations, body styles and powertrains.
Legacy
Saab matters because a relatively small manufacturer developed a coherent alternative to larger-volume European and American ranges. Its early cars joined aerodynamic bodies, front-wheel drive and compact two-stroke engines; the 99 and 900 turned a practical family-car layout into a platform for turbocharging; and later models continued the emphasis on hatchback utility, driver-focused interiors and safety development.
The aviation connection is real but should not be used as a catch-all explanation. Aircraft engineers and aerodynamic methods influenced the first car, while later Saab automobiles were developed within an increasingly specialised automotive organisation and, eventually, multinational ownership. The most accurate history keeps those corporate eras separate and identifies each model year, market name, trim, body style, engine family, facelift and production period on its own evidence.
