Mazda RX-8 Original Generation Spirit R 1308 cc in 2011–2012

The Spirit R marked the RX-8’s final production period, with manual and automatic versions and an allocation expanded during 2012.

Scope and identity

This record covers the Japanese-market Spirit R during calendar years 2011–2012, within the Spirit R 1308 cc RENESIS engine branch. The dates describe its launch and production close, rather than separate model-year specifications. Mazda positioned this four-door, four-seat sports car as the RX-8’s final special edition. Its name recalled the closing limited edition of the RX-7. Mazda’s launch announcement.

2011: announcement and Japanese launch

Mazda announced the Spirit R on 7 October 2011, specifying a Japanese sales launch on 24 November. The manual version was based on the Type RS; the automatic derived from the Type E. Both had six-speed transmissions. The initial sales plan was 1,000 cars. Following launch, the Japanese RX-8 range comprised Spirit R and the automatic Type G.

Shared visual details included Spirit R badging, black lamp bezels and red brake calipers. Curtain and front side airbags were standard. These were specifications for the Japanese special edition, not a worldwide model-year package. Mazda, 7 October 2011.

Engine and transmission-specific equipment

Mazda identified the engine as water-cooled, two-rotor RENESIS, with 654 cc per rotor: 1,308 cc in total. Both versions drove the rear wheels.

The manual combined RECARO bucket seats, Bilstein dampers and bronze 19-inch forged aluminium wheels. The automatic had black leather seats with red stitching, heated front seats, sports suspension and gunmetal 18-inch alloy wheels. These equipment lists must remain distinct when identifying an individual car. Mazda’s April 2012 specification summary.

2012: expanded allocation and production closure

On 26 April 2012, Mazda announced another 1,000 Spirit R cars in response to demand, beyond the original 1,000-car plan. This establishes an announced allocation of 2,000, not an independently verified final production total. Manual cars accounted for 66% of orders at that announcement; the percentage is an order snapshot, not a final manufacturing split. Mazda retained June 2012 as the planned end of RX-8 production. Contemporary reporting by Response placed the final RX-8’s completion at Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan, on the evening of 22 June 2012. Mazda’s later corporate chronology independently confirms June 2012 as the production-end month. Neither the November sales launch nor the June factory closure establishes the dates of every individual car’s assembly, delivery or registration. Historical significance

The Spirit R belongs to the closing chapter of the original RX-8 generation. RX-8 production ended in 2012, followed by an eleven-year interruption in Mazda’s production of rotary-engined vehicles. Production resumed in June 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, making the Spirit R a marker of a distinct ending in Mazda’s rotary history rather than the permanent abandonment of the engine.
