Mazda RX-8 Original Generation Mazdaspeed Version II Tuned Twin-Rotor Engine

A Type S-derived rotary application combining dedicated engine calibration and mechanical tuning with a six-speed manual.

Engine identity

The Mazdaspeed Version II used a tuned Type S-derived, water-cooled twin-rotor engine with a six-speed manual transmission. Mazda announced this Japanese-market application on 20 August 2004, scheduling sales for early October. Mazda announcement.

RENESIS architecture and manufacturing origin

The underlying RENESIS family used two 654 cc rotors, giving a nominal displacement of 1308 cc. Its naturally aspirated design incorporated side exhaust ports and Mazda’s Sequential Dynamic Air Intake System. Mazda presented these features as improvements to breathing, fuel consumption and emissions relative to earlier rotary designs.

RENESIS production began at Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan, on 29 January 2003. This establishes the engine family’s manufacturing origin; it is not a Version II engine production-start date. Mazda’s RENESIS production announcement.

Dedicated tuning

Mazda specified a dedicated PCM calibration, improved intake duct, sports exhaust with catalyst, upgraded spark plugs and eccentric-shaft rebalancing. Existing Mazdaspeed components added an oil cooler and lightweight flywheel; an earthing kit was optional. Mazda associated these changes with breathing, combustion stability, cooling and response, without publishing revised power or torque figures. Factory equipment list.

Vehicle application

The parent RX-8 was a four-door, four-seat sports car whose production began at Ujina No. 1 in Hiroshima on 17 February 2003. Mazda identified the Japanese Type S as the high-output six-speed-manual version, separately from the standard-output automatic and five-speed-manual offerings. This distinction establishes the donor application’s position within the Japanese range. Mazda’s RX-8 production announcement.

For comparison, the Japanese base-grade RENESIS engine has its own application record. The original RX-8 generation provides broader vehicle history.

Chronology and historical significance

Version II continued Mazda’s coordinated factory-tuning programme. The announcement planned 180 cars, rather than confirming completed production. It supplies no exact engine build period or separate tuning facility. October 2004 denotes scheduled sales timing, not a model-year designation. Mazda’s Version II release.
