Mazda R360 Coupe Original Generation Manual

The manual R360 Coupe paired Mazda’s first passenger-car design with a four-speed gearbox. Offered at the Japanese launch in May 1960 for ¥300,000, it represented the more affordable transmission choice.

The launch manual variant

The manual was a transmission variant of the Mazda R360 Coupe original generation, rather than a separate generation or body style. Mazda launched the R360 Coupe across Japan on 28 May 1960, with the manual priced at ¥300,000 and the torque-converter version at ¥320,000. These are Japanese launch prices, not prices for every subsequent production year. Mazda’s launch history explicitly distinguishes the two versions.

Four-speed manual transmission

The defining equipment was a four-speed manual gearbox. The automatic sibling instead used a two-speed torque-converter arrangement, described as a semi-automatic in Mazda’s German technical archive. The archive also states that most R360 buyers chose the conventional manual. Its discussion concerns the Japanese market; it does not establish a separate German-market specification. Mazda technical history.

The same history says the semi-automatic was offered without a surcharge at certain times. That later pricing observation should not replace the documented ¥20,000 difference at launch.

Body and shared engineering

The manual retained the R360’s two-door, four-seat coupe configuration. Mazda’s corporate chronology identifies a 356 cc air-cooled engine rated at 16 horsepower for the model. These are shared R360 characteristics, not evidence of a distinct manual-only engine tune. Mazda corporate chronology.

The body used monocoque construction, with light alloys helping reduce weight. Independent suspension at all four wheels employed torsion rubber, and Mazda described the compact cabin as a 2+2 arrangement. These features placed the manual version within the same lightweight engineering programme as its torque-converter counterpart. Mazda’s engineering account.

Production and historical context

The documented starting point is the Japanese launch in calendar year 1960; it should not be interpreted as a separately established export model year. Mazda’s centenary account describes the R360 emerging from a new factory using computer-assisted production management. It presents the car as a major step from commercial vehicles into passenger-car manufacturing. Mazda centenary history.

The manufacturer sources cited here do not establish a manual-specific cessation date or a complete annual specification sequence. Consequently, this record does not assign the manual an unverified end year, production total or export-market specification. The broader production history belongs to the R360 Coupe model record.

Historically, the manual combined the R360’s lightweight construction with the lower launch price. It was an important part of Mazda’s entry into affordable passenger-car ownership, while the automatic offered a different approach to driving convenience.
