Mazda MX-5 Miata NB Roadster Coupe 1.8-Litre DOHC Engine
The Roadster Coupe’s 1.8-litre DOHC four powered three grades, with transmission-specific outputs.
Application and context
The NB Roadster Coupe offered a 1.8-litre inline-four with double overhead camshafts and rear-wheel drive. Mazda announced this Japan-produced, two-seat coupe on 9 October 2003 for customer orders in Japan. That announcement date does not establish a model year or the complete engine production period.
Grade-specific specifications
- Type S: 1800RS-based; six-speed manual; 160 PS.
- Type A: 1800RS-based; six-speed manual; 160 PS.
- Type E: 1800VS Combination B-based; four-speed automatic; 154 PS.
These are Japanese launch specifications. PS denotes metric horsepower; the automatic’s rating must not be substituted for the manual’s.
Historical significance and evidence
This application paired established Roadster powertrains with a revised closed body developed using Mazda Engineering and Technology’s limited-production expertise. The announcement documents the combinations, but does not explain their output difference or identify an engine assembly plant. See Mazda’s launch release.
