Cadillac V-16
Cadillac's sixteen-cylinder flagship of 1930–1940, combining individually specified coachwork with two distinct engine designs across its production life.
Overview
The V-16, also called the Cadillac Sixteen, was Cadillac’s flagship luxury-car line for 1930–1940. Its identity combined sixteen-cylinder power with a choice of coachbuilt bodies, rather than a single body shape. It sat above the marque’s eight-cylinder cars and, during their overlapping years, its V12 range.
This record covers the model line. The 1930–1937 and 1938–1940 periods distinguish two fundamentally different engine designs; individual series, coachwork styles and model years sit within that history. The Cadillac & LaSalle Club’s engine reference, printed page 43, separates the 452-cubic-inch and 431-cubic-inch applications accordingly.
Development and introduction
Cadillac developed the Sixteen to provide smooth, powerful propulsion for expensive custom and semi-custom cars. The Cadillac Database places the start of the programme in 1926 and identifies Owen Nacker as an engine designer recruited by Cadillac chief Lawrence Fisher.
Its public debut came in January 1930, after the Wall Street crash. A December 1929 dealer letter reproduced in the Cadillac Database’s introduction announced exhibition at the forthcoming New York show. The announcement, preparation of show cars and 1930 catalogue identity therefore describe different events, not conflicting model years.
The commercial setting was difficult. GM’s 1931 V16 collection record explains that the crash reduced the number of customers able to buy such costly cars. The V-16 nevertheless gave Cadillac a conspicuous engineering and luxury flagship through the Depression.
Production and coachwork
Cadillac vehicle manufacture was based in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Its Clark Street factory operated throughout the V-16 era, within the 1921–1987 period recorded by the Detroit Historical Society. Body manufacture was a separate part of the process: early Fleetwood work included Pennsylvania-built bodies before operations transferred to Detroit.
The range encompassed open roadsters and phaetons, convertibles, enclosed coupés, sedans, limousines and formal town cars. GM describes ten basic body styles for the early line, with extensive scope to choose colours and finishes. Early coachbuilt bodies used metal panels supported by wooden framing. These choices made the body builder and body style essential parts of a particular car’s identity.
Fisher and Fleetwood supplied bodies, while independent American and European coachbuilders also worked on Sixteen chassis. The Cadillac Database’s model guide catalogues these by job or style number. “Fleetwood” here identifies coachwork; it should not be read as a modern equipment trim. Nor does an individual roadster’s appearance or specification describe every V-16.

The original engine used two banks of eight cylinders sharing a crankshaft. GM quotes 165 hp for its early V16 description; this is not a rating for every year of the model. The engine’s refinement complemented the personalised bodies rather than defining a single sporting derivative.
The replacement engine was lower and lighter. Its much wider cylinder-bank angle suited a lower body profile; side valves were part of a new packaging solution, not simply an alteration to the original overhead-valve unit. Chronology and identification
- 1930–1931: Series 452/452-A established the original Sixteen range.
- 1932–1933: Series 452-B and 452-C continued the first engine family with evolving body design.
- 1934–1937: More streamlined styling replaced the earlier upright forms. The V-16 retained its 452-cubic-inch engine through this period, including the pre-1938 Series 90 cars.
- 1938–1940: The redesigned Sixteen used the 431-cubic-inch engine. These are the later Series 90 cars; the series name alone does not identify which engine is fitted.
The Cadillac Database provides the series sequence, while the club engine table establishes the mechanical boundary. Bumper Guardian describes the styling progression and the end of production in 1940. The intervening styling changes did not each create a new engine generation.
Markets and historical significance
The Sixteen was an American-built luxury car with an overseas clientele. The Cadillac Database documents exports of both complete cars and bare chassis, together with European promotional activity in 1930. A locally commissioned body is therefore a coachwork distinction, not evidence of a separate nationally manufactured V-16 model. Identification should retain the chassis series, body job number, engine and documented year rather than relying on registration date alone.
The V-16 joined ambitious engine development to unusually individual bodywork. Its historical importance lies in that combination and in Cadillac’s willingness to sustain a prestige programme during a severely restricted luxury market. Surviving cars also preserve the work of several coachbuilding organisations; a single designer credit cannot describe the whole line.
Published production tabulations differ, so no definitive total is assigned here. The 1938 engine change and final 1940 model year are firmer reference points than disputed counts of individual styles or surviving cars.
