Cadillac CTS
A three-generation luxury car line led by a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan, with coupé, Sport Wagon and CTS-V derivatives that helped redefine Cadillac's modern identity.
Overview
The CTS was Cadillac’s sedan-led luxury performance model line, spanning the 2003–2019 North American model years. Its principal manufacturing home was General Motors’ Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, United States. Three generations combined a longitudinal front engine with rear-wheel drive; selected later versions offered all-wheel drive. The second generation expanded into two-door coupé and five-door Sport Wagon bodies, while CTS-V derivatives gave the line a distinct high-performance identity.
The dates require care. GM’s January 2002 plant-opening announcement states that initial CTS production began in the fourth quarter of 2001, with shipments to dealers starting on 7 January 2002. Design and purpose
The CTS made sharp-edged body surfaces, a prominent shield grille and upright lighting central to Cadillac’s sports-sedan identity. Its original sales literature explicitly connected the shape with aircraft-inspired surfaces. This was a visual departure from the marque’s traditional large luxury saloons, paired with an engineering emphasis on handling and driver involvement. The contemporary XLR roadster expressed a related design direction in a different body and mechanical package.
The original CTS seated five and used four-wheel independent suspension: short-and-long-arm front suspension and a multilink rear arrangement. Vented disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering and rear-wheel drive supported its performance brief. Cadillac’s 2003 US specification sheet records a 3.2-litre double-overhead-cam V6 rated at 220 hp, with a five-speed automatic available. Luxury and Luxury Sport packages changed equipment and chassis details; they were not separate generations.
Generations and body styles
The following boundaries use North American model years, rather than registration dates. The second generation’s body styles ended at different times, overlapping the third-generation sedan.

First generation
The first CTS established the sedan formula and then broadened its engine range. In the US, a 3.6-litre V6 joined for 2004; for 2005, a 2.8-litre V6 replaced the original 3.2-litre entry engine. The 2005 update also substituted a six-speed manual for the earlier five-speed manual. These were developments within the original generation. The 2004 CTS-V used a naturally aspirated 5.7-litre LS6 V8 and six-speed Tremec manual, together with larger Brembo brakes and substantial suspension changes. It was a mechanical performance derivative, not simply a trim package. Cadillac’s 2006 equipment guide lists the replacement 6.0-litre LS2 V8, still paired with a six-speed manual. Second generation
The redesigned 2008 sedan retained the rear-drive sports-sedan approach while offering all-wheel drive and a more elaborate cabin. Its US launch range included two distinct 3.6-litre V6 specifications: a 258 hp version and a 304 hp direct-injection version. Equal displacement did not mean identical fuel systems or output. The Sport Wagon, shown at Pebble Beach in 2008 for the 2010 model year, added a rear liftgate, folding-seat load space and tall rear lamps. Cadillac presented it as an alternative to larger utility vehicles and as a body style with particular relevance to Europe. The 2011 Coupé had a lower roof, shorter rear overhang and wider rear track than the sedan. It shared the Sigma chassis family with the sedan and wagon but had a distinct body, rather than simply losing two doors. Cadillac’s 2011 US brochure lists 3.0- and 3.6-litre direct-injection V6 choices across the sedan and wagon range, with the regular coupé using the 3.6. It also documents the second-generation CTS-V’s supercharged 6.2-litre V8, rated at 556 hp, six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, Brembo brakes and Magnetic Ride Control. Third generation
For 2014 the sedan moved to the rear-drive architecture developed for the smaller ATS. Its longer, lower body positioned CTS more directly in the upper midsize premium market. Aluminium door structures helped control weight, while a double-pivot MacPherson-strut front suspension, five-link rear suspension and electric power steering changed the chassis package. Cadillac also extended Magnetic Ride Control availability beyond CTS-V. The European introduction scheduled Lansing production for autumn 2013 and European showroom arrival for early 2014. The 2014 US engine range comprised a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V6 and the V-Sport’s twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre V6. V-Sport used rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic and an electronic limited-slip differential. The ordinary 2.0-litre and all-wheel-drive 3.6-litre launch specifications used six-speed automatics; the rear-drive 3.6 used an eight-speed. The new 2016 CTS-V used a supercharged 6.2-litre LT4 V8, rated at 640 hp in GM’s SAE-certified specification, with an eight-speed automatic. Its engine was distinct from the preceding supercharged V8 despite sharing the same nominal displacement. The new V remained a sedan: the earlier CTS-V Coupé’s 2015 model-year continuation did not make it a third-generation car. Markets, equipment and production boundaries
Lansing was the central CTS production location, but local assembly also formed part of Cadillac’s early Chinese expansion. GM’s April 2005 Shanghai show announcement distinguished an imported 3.6-litre CTS from a locally assembled 2.8-litre CTS supplied by Shanghai GM. This evidence establishes that particular market arrangement; it does not establish a complete overseas production total or a universal assembly origin for every CTS. Export ranges were not identical to the US catalogue. The September 2013 European release specified the new sedan with a 2.0-litre turbo engine and six-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive available. Its arrival date and equipment listing should be read as European launch information, rather than applied to North American V6 or V-Sport cars.
Specifications also changed within a generation. The 2019 US catalogue lists 268 hp for the 2.0-litre turbo, 335 hp for the naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V6 and 420 hp for the twin-turbo V-Sport, all with eight-speed automatics. Those figures belong to that model year and market. Luxury and Premium Luxury identify equipment levels; V-Sport and CTS-V identify different performance offerings. Historical significance
CTS helped establish a modern Cadillac identity centred on distinctive design and sports-sedan engineering. Across its life, the model moved from a single V6 sedan to a broader family, then back to a sedan with a more clearly defined place above the smaller ATS. The wagon and coupé demonstrate the breadth of the second-generation programme, while the V derivatives show how far its chassis and powertrain brief extended beyond the ordinary luxury specification.
The line also anchored the beginnings of V-Series. Cadillac dates that programme’s racing launch to the CTS-V.R’s debut and victory at Sebring in March 2004, and identifies subsequent CTS-V introductions in 2009 and 2016. These are V-Series milestones, not the launch years of the corresponding ordinary CTS generations.
