Alfa Romeo Spider 105/115 Series 1 1600 Duetto 1570 cc in 1966
The debut-year 1600 Spider combined Alfa Romeo twin-cam engineering with Pininfarina’s rounded bodywork.
1966: the debut year
Alfa Romeo introduced the 1600 Spider at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Its familiar Duetto name emerged from a naming competition but, according to Alfa Romeo’s retrospective, remained unofficial because of an existing trademark. The launch inaugurated the rounded-tail first series, dated 1966–1969 by the manufacturer.
This entry covers calendar-year 1966 within the 1570 cc Twin-Cam Engine record. It does not define a separate market-specific model year.
Body and mechanical specification
Pininfarina developed the open body around Giulia Sprint GT mechanical foundations. Rounded ends and sculpted sides gave the first series its distinctive profile. The 1600 designation represented a 1,570 cc four-cylinder twin-cam engine. The chassis combined rear-wheel drive, a five-speed gearbox, independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes.
The 1600 Duetto variant and Series 1 generation provide the broader catalogue context.
Production and international launch
The manufacturer describes Spider production in Italy through Alfa Romeo at Arese and Pininfarina in Turin, without allocating 1966 output between them. American promotion included carrying three Spiders aboard the Raffaello from Genoa towards New York, calling at Cannes. The debut established the design identity developed through subsequent Spider series. Source: Alfa Romeo’s anniversary history.
Specification scope
The cited retrospective surveys the entire Spider lineage. Its references to other engine capacities and injection systems should not be treated as a specification for this 1966 entry. Market-specific equipment, power-rating standards, chassis-number boundaries and annual production totals are not established here.
