Alfa Romeo Spider 105/115 Series 1 1600 Duetto
The 1600 Spider launched Alfa Romeo’s rounded-tail Spider in 1966. Commonly called Duetto, it combined Pininfarina bodywork with a 1570 cc twin-cam engine.
The original 1600 Spider
Presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the 1600 Spider was the launch variant of the Spider Series 1. Alfa Romeo describes Duetto as an unofficial name: it won a naming competition but encountered an existing trademark. Enthusiasts subsequently applied it more broadly to the Spider family. Alfa Romeo’s anniversary history explains this distinction.
Design and production setting
Pininfarina developed the new Spider using Giulia Sprint GT mechanical foundations. Its rounded nose and tail gave Series 1 the Italian nickname osso di seppia, or cuttlefish bone. The two-seat, two-door open body established the original Spider’s identity.
The car was an Italian production undertaking involving Alfa Romeo and Pininfarina. Alfa Romeo’s retrospective names Arese and Turin as production locations across the Spider programme, without separating factory responsibilities for the original 1600 variant. Engine and chassis
The 1600 designation refers to a 1570 cc four-cylinder engine. Mounted longitudinally at the front, it used a light-alloy block and head, chain-driven twin overhead camshafts and two twin-choke carburettors. A five-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels through a single dry-plate clutch.
The steel unitary body had independent front suspension and a live rear axle. Disc brakes were fitted at all four wheels. These details describe the original carburettor-fed 1600; specifications belonging to later injected Spiders should not be transferred to this variant. The Alfa Romeo Museum’s vehicle record documents this configuration.
Chronology and variant boundaries
The specialist AlfaDuetto catalogue lists the 1600 Spider for 1966–1968. This is a variant production-period listing, not a universal model-year designation or a precise final assembly date. It is shorter than the parent Series 1 period of 1966–1969.
The same catalogue distinguishes the 1750 Spider Veloce and 1300 Junior as separate versions. Its narrative and table differ over the 1750’s starting year, so they do not establish an exact replacement date for the 1600. The rounded-tail body alone therefore cannot identify a car as a 1600 Duetto. Series 1 chronology and variant catalogue.
Historical significance
The original Duetto gained particular visibility through the 1967 film The Graduate. Its importance lies both in that cultural association and in introducing the rounded-tail form at the beginning of the long-running Alfa Romeo Spider line. The later use of Duetto as a family nickname should not obscure this specific 1600 variant. AlfaDuetto’s historical account.
