Alfa Romeo Giulietta 750/101 SZ
The Giulietta SZ was Zagato’s lightweight competition coupé within the original Giulietta family. Manufacturer histories place production in 1960–1962, spanning Coda Tonda and Coda Tronca bodies.
The Zagato competition Giulietta
The Giulietta SZ, or Sprint Zagato, was a lightweight two-seat competition coupé in the first-generation Giulietta family. Its aluminium body and compact proportions distinguished it from the conventional Sprint. Alfa Romeo developed the SZ with Zagato, which also built it in Italy. Alfa Romeo’s production account.
The SZ used the chassis basis of the Sprint Speciale, adapting Giulietta engineering for amateur drivers competing in the Gran Turismo category. Its place in the hierarchy is therefore a variant beneath the 750/101 generation. Manufacturer history, page 4.
Origins and production chronology
Alfa Romeo traces the project to Zagato’s reconstruction of Massimo Leto di Priolo’s damaged Giulietta Sprint Veloce. Lightweight replacement bodywork demonstrated the competition potential of the concept in 1956. This antecedent belongs to the development story; it does not establish 1956 as the production introduction of the SZ.
The manufacturer’s 2004 retrospective places the rounded-tail SZ in 1960–1961 and the subsequent Coda Tronca in 1961–1962. These are calendar production periods with an overlap, rather than separate export model years. Alfa Romeo’s chronology.
The Sprint Veloce remains a separate sibling record: the early rebodied competition cars and the later SZ should not be treated as one uniform production specification.
Coda Tonda and Coda Tronca
Coda Tonda identifies the rounded-tail body. From 1961, the Coda Tronca developed the shape into a lower body with a longer rear section ending abruptly. Alfa Romeo credits Ercole Spada with the later design and describes covered headlights and front disc brakes on that version. These details should not automatically be assigned to every earlier SZ. Alfa Romeo’s body-development account.
The two names describe successive body developments within the SZ variant, rather than national-market trims or a new Giulietta generation. The distinction is central to identifying an individual car and interpreting its specification.
Engine, transmission and competition recognition
The FIA Historic Database identifies the Giulietta SZ as a rear-wheel-drive, four-cylinder car of 1,290 cc. Its GT homologation number is 124, dated 24 September 1960. That date records competition recognition, not the first production car or customer delivery. FIA homologation record.
The engine belonged to Alfa Romeo’s aluminium twin-overhead-camshaft family. The manufacturer describes a five-speed gearbox and a competition-oriented combination of engine tuning, low weight and aerodynamic bodywork. Individual racing preparation should be established separately before assigning output or performance figures to a particular chassis. Engine history, page 4; transmission and body specification.
Historical significance and production uncertainty
The SZ illustrates how Giulietta mechanical components supported a specialised competition car through lightweight coachbuilding. Alfa Romeo records its use in circuit racing, rallies and hill climbs. Its rounded-tail and truncated-tail forms make aerodynamic development a defining part of its history. Manufacturer retrospective.
Published production totals are inconsistent even within Alfa Romeo’s archive: the 2004 English account gives 217 SZ cars, while the 2014 French history gives 210. Neither is adopted here as an undisputed total or used to calculate a definitive split between body forms. 2004 account; 2014 account, page 4.
