Overview

Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch began discussions in 1969. Joint development took shape in the early 1970s, with a roadworthy prototype in 1974. The G made its public debut in Toulon in February 1979, followed that month by production at Graz-Thondorf. Mercedes-Benz’s development history.

The original 460 used a separate ladder frame—a supporting chassis beneath the body—and coil-sprung rigid axles, which connect the wheels on each axle through a common assembly. Its selectable four-wheel drive normally drove the rear wheels, with front-wheel drive engaged when required. Engaging the front axle created a rigid connection between the front and rear drives; this should not be described as the later permanent-drive system with a lockable centre differential. Mercedes-Benz’s archive explicitly contrasts that rigid connection with the 463’s permanent four-wheel drive and three differential locks. 463 drivetrain history.

Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 retrospective dates the change from optional to standard front and rear axle locks to 1985. It does not establish every market or specialist specification, so individual vehicles require specification-specific confirmation. Permanent four-wheel drive followed with the 463’s 1990 launch. Model series

The series overlap because utility and luxury models developed in parallel. The 460 remained available for professional users when the more comfortable 463 appeared; these were branches of the family, rather than a simple replacement sequence. Mercedes-Benz series history.

460: the original model

The 1979 launch offered diesel 240 GD and 300 GD models and petrol 230 G and 280 GE models, with two wheelbases and open, station-wagon and panel-van bodies. Launch range. 461 and later utility models

The 2019 retrospective identifies 1992 as the utility branch’s transition to the 461, while also mentioning earlier military use of that designation. It does not establish a universal production end date. Mercedes-Benz anniversary history.

Later professional vehicles should not all be labelled 461. Mercedes-Benz’s June 2022 documentation identifies its new rescue and special-operations G 350 d as series 464, retaining rigid axles front and rear. First 463: presented in 1989, launched in 1990

The revised range was presented in September 1989 and launched in 1990. Its original drivetrain combined permanent four-wheel drive with three selectable differential locks, alongside a more comfortable cabin and available anti-lock braking. Redesigned 463: the 2018 introduction

Production of the redesigned 463 began in May 2018. Mercedes-Benz anniversary history. Its combustion-engine configuration retained a ladder frame and three mechanical differential locks, but combined a rigid rear axle with independent front suspension: the front wheels could move vertically without being joined by a rigid axle. 2018 chassis introduction.

This heading identifies the documented redesign, not an open-ended production period or a series designation for every later derivative. The cited records do not establish all subsequent series boundaries.

Battery-electric development

The G 580 with EQ Technology documented in April 2024 uses four individually controlled electric motors. Torque vectoring—adjusting driving torque at individual wheels—provides virtual differential-lock functions instead of the preceding mechanical three-lock arrangement.
