Infiniti
Nissan’s luxury marque, launched in the United States in 1989 with the Q45 sedan and M30 coupe, later expanded into sports sedans, convertibles, crossovers and SUVs.
Nissan’s luxury marque
Infiniti is the luxury division of Nissan. Its commercial launch came in the United States in 1989 with the Q45 sedan and M30 coupe. The marque combined performance-oriented vehicles with a dedicated retail and ownership experience. Its history subsequently encompassed sedans, coupes, convertibles, crossovers and SUVs. Manufacturer history.
Infiniti is catalogued here at manufacturer level as a marque. Nissan’s corporate ownership is distinct from the vehicle hierarchy: individual Infiniti model families belong beneath this record.
Development and launch
The project began within Nissan in 1985; the Infiniti name and emblem followed in 1987. These development milestones precede the marque’s retail launch in 1989. Infiniti’s official chronology identifies the Q45 sedan and M30 coupe as its two launch models. Infiniti chronology.
Nissan’s account of the Horizon Task Force dates the opening of 51 United States retail locations to 8 November 1989. Staff preparation and customer treatment were central to the project, including upfront pricing and loan vehicles during servicing. This made the retail organisation part of the marque’s intended distinction alongside the cars themselves. Nissan’s account of the launch.
The Q45 and the original design identity
The original Q45 established a deliberately distinctive flagship identity. Nissan’s Heritage Collection describes its grille-free front and cloisonné emblem as expressions of Japanese design and craftsmanship. A newly developed 4.5-litre, double-overhead-camshaft V8 supplied its power. Hydraulic active suspension was available in the Selection Package described by the archive; it was not fitted to every Q45.
The archive also records that the Q45 went on sale in Japan. That model’s Japanese availability should be distinguished from the launch of Infiniti’s American retail network. The collection’s detailed specifications concern a particular 1991 G50 example and should not be treated as universal specifications for every market or generation. From flagship sedans to performance crossovers
Later vehicles broadened Infiniti’s identity beyond its original flagship. The G35 and G37 represented its sports-sedan and coupe interests; the G37 family also included a convertible. The FX and smaller EX brought performance-oriented styling into crossover formats. Infiniti’s own legacy catalogue places the G35 at the 2003 model year and the FX35 in its 2003 chronology. These dates describe particular products, not the beginning of every associated model family. Infiniti legacy catalogue.
A naming strategy announced in December 2012 applied from the 2014 model year: Q designated sedans, coupes and convertibles, while QX designated crossovers and SUVs. The following two digits expressed position within the range. The change was phased into existing products as well as new vehicles, so a new badge alone does not establish a new generation or an engine displacement. Infiniti’s naming announcement.
Engines and driver technology
Infiniti’s engineering history extends beyond the original Q45 V8. Its chronology records the introduction of the VQ V6 family into its range in 1995. Later developments included camera-based parking assistance, lane-departure systems and Direct Adaptive Steering. These technologies appeared on particular vehicles and equipment specifications; they were not common to every Infiniti. Infiniti technology chronology.
Another development was VC-Turbo, a turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of changing its compression ratio mechanically. Infiniti’s United States history describes its variable-compression mechanism and development programme. Engine output, availability and installation dates must be established for the relevant model and market rather than inferred from the marque name. Infiniti’s VC-Turbo overview.
Manufacturing and international markets
Infiniti’s manufacturing history spans several countries. Its United States reference page identifies Tochigi in Japan with Q50 and Q60 assembly, Nissan Shatai Kyushu with QX80, Smyrna in Tennessee with QX60, and Aguascalientes in Mexico with QX50 and QX55. These are model-specific manufacturing associations, not a claim that all these vehicles remain in production or that every generation used the same factory. Manufacturer’s assembly overview.
International expansion included Canada in 1990, China in 2007, and Western and Central Europe in 2008, according to Infiniti’s December 2012 corporate account. International expansion chronology.
The European chapter also included Q30 and QX30 production at Sunderland in the United Kingdom. In March 2019, Infiniti announced that this production would end by mid-year as part of a restructuring focused on North America and China. The announcement concerned Western European withdrawal and explicitly distinguished other regions. Infiniti’s United Kingdom website subsequently recorded the cessation of European commercial activities on 31 March 2020, with servicing and warranty support continuing. Historical significance
Infiniti illustrates Nissan’s effort to build a distinct luxury identity through product design, engineering and the ownership experience. Its early Q45, subsequent sports cars and sedans, and performance-oriented crossovers show how that identity developed across different vehicle categories. Its international expansion and later Western European withdrawal also distinguish the history of a global marque from its presence in any one market.
