Hongqi
FAW’s luxury marque, established in 1958 and associated with Chinese state transport before expanding into private ownership and export markets.
Hongqi
Hongqi is the Chinese luxury marque of FAW, with origins in 1958. Its early cars were built in small numbers for official use; later products addressed private buyers and overseas markets. It belongs at the manufacturer-and-marque level of this catalogue, rather than representing a single vehicle or model generation. The distinction between Hongqi as a marque and FAW as its manufacturer is explicit in the Norwegian importer’s company overview.
Hongqi’s historical importance rests on its association with Chinese state transport and the subsequent development of that identity into a commercial luxury brand.
Origins and ceremonial cars
Hongqi’s official chronology distinguishes the first car of 1958 from CA72 production in August 1959, following further development. It records successful trial production of the three-row CA770 in 1965. These are development and production milestones, not model-year designations. The CA770 became associated with transporting state leaders and visiting dignitaries. See the dated entries in Hongqi’s Indonesian history.
The wider ceremonial family included the armoured CA772 and open-top CA770J inspection car. These had different duties and body arrangements; their specifications should not be treated as interchangeable with those of an ordinary enclosed limousine. Hongqi’s international history also documents experimental successors, illustrating why a prototype’s appearance does not by itself establish series production.
Development, engineering and production
Hongqi’s development organisation is centred on Changchun, China. Its production account distinguishes the H-series smart factory from the L-series customisation centre, reflecting different approaches to series manufacture and bespoke luxury cars. The marque also describes engineering and testing operations elsewhere in China. Hongqi’s production and engineering overview provides this institutional context without establishing a single production location or manufacturing method for every historical model.
Engineering changed substantially across the marque’s history. Hongqi’s archive records collaboration with Ford on the CA7460 and a 2.4-litre engine installation in the CA7242E6 in 2002. These are specific model developments, not specifications for the entire marque. The archive subsequently records the H7’s introduction. Hongqi’s historical record therefore describes several distinct product programmes rather than one uninterrupted limousine generation.
Commercial luxury and design identity
Hongqi identifies 2018 as a turning point, when it introduced a new brand strategy and design concept. Its stated design vocabulary includes a waterfall grille and a flag-inspired central emblem. These motifs connect the commercial range with the marque’s ceremonial identity. The official brand account describes the change as part of a longer movement towards commercial sales and exports.
The H9 illustrates the modern luxury-saloon direction. FAW’s launch account, reproduced by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, identifies its Chinese-market introduction on 23 August 2020 and places it within the H series. Its prominent grille and red front trim demonstrate how the newer design language was applied to a production car. This launch date concerns the H9 in China; it does not establish availability in every export market. See Hongqi H9 Flagship Sedan Hits the Market.
Electric vehicles and export markets
The electric E-HS9 SUV brought a different body style and propulsion system to Hongqi’s international expansion. The Norwegian importer distinguishes establishment in Norway in 2020 from the first customer deliveries in January 2022. This is a useful distinction between market entry and delivery chronology, rather than a production-year range for the vehicle. Hongqi Norway’s account identifies the E-HS9 as its initial sales model.
Hongqi’s history consequently spans official limousines, commercially marketed luxury saloons and electric SUVs. Its ceremonial heritage remains central to understanding the marque, but individual models require their own market, generation and powertrain histories.
